AHHHHHHH.... there is a Audio Controle EQ on E-bay at this moment, I put it on watch. I will pick a couple differant ones in the next few months. They will indeed come in handy for me.. I came to conclusion today thaat with doing open baffle fullragers it is a must..or use a good integrated with all the bells & whisles.. but for my seperates, EQ's will be a must.I am all test clipped out from making passive notch filters & the sort...to much mind bending work, I tell ya...it gives me fits..I would rather hit a few sliders & rotate a few knobs on vintage than what I have been doing.. you would not believe....
Follow Ups:
Not running the B200 as such a wide range driver? Of course that would require a tweeter change. The driver starts to run into problems near 1k5 hertz. And you darn sure want to stay away from Fs.For an EQ I'd suggest you spend a little time at pro audio rental places. Find out what used to be the standard. One or two names will stand out(and one is still a lot of money). These units are being dumped on the open market as the change to digital takes place. Ideally you want fine control and a calibrated mike. Look at Klark Teknik DN360 for example(virutally unchanged over 20+ years).
Yep, definatley..I have disconnected the ribbon at the moment, no chance of getting that low without seriouse steep active...I will play later with that,, but ,tore out all filters ..evrything & when direct to amp & with my new 18" baffles,,,it is nice without any passive after amp filters,, so I am hoping an EQ will fill & cut where needed. My Scott 299B into vintage 12" alnico's in Open baffle is filled in excellent with a twist of a tone controle & flick of a switch..it is kicking the sh.....out of anything I have @ the moment..kinda funny. I have almost no real money into that bedroom set up..I am eye balling Orban & Klark-Teknik..even a few others that accept single ended from the get go...I am on the hunt...
that a nice smooth wide range speaker simply can't be cheap. Even the better ones are best used for a restricted range and many require a notch filter. So I guess I am saying if you really want 100 to 10Khz you better fork out $500 or more per driver and use a notch filter(and a bandpass filter). I use the audax which is much the same as the B200 (not quite the range). I found out in a hurry it was best to limit the top end to under 2Khz and ideally 1k5 with a steep roll off. I'm only good for 250 on the low end but yours will do 100 hertz.
Speakers are tough and force you into compromises. Line level passive more than 12dB require large inductors and very low output impedance from the preamp. That basically rules out a tube preamp or requires op-amp buffers.....or a tube preamp that runs something like a 5998 tube. A headphone amp might work to drive such filters. Forget cathode followers based on 12aXX series tubes. They are only "paper tigers" and can't really drive a load.
So I admire your approach but I think an active crossover just makes life a lot easier. If we don't include the ability to change crossover points with a knob it shouldn't cost much to build one. The marchand solution of using plug in cards to change crossover points might be a good compromise. Adding one dual triode (per side) allows input and output buffering and would allow a 10Khz pot.
Have you invested in something to measure in-room response?
We are doing much the same stuff. I am just using an active crossover and running a compression driver/waveguide down much lower. I have a couple of friends involved too. One will use the same mid but the heil amt for a tweeter with active crossover. The other had lowthers so went more the wide range approach. He did the basszilla and it is worth reading up on. It is a mix of active and passive filtering and gives you a good indication of the complexity of the crossover needed to tame (and intergrate other drivers with) these wide range drivers. Nothing is as easy as it seems at first look:)
I still need to decide of woofers. I'm torn between open baffle and (front) horn loaded. No WAF to worry about for the first time in my life!

P.S. Sometimes I think I should just get the behringer with mike, decide on crossover points and play with room treatments, and then go back to what we are trying to do.
Yep..But........there is some vintage alnico drivers,,that have a midrange that would make you forget about treble beam & rolled top...people just ain't talkin...including me....*s*,. The Heil AMT is @ great advantage to my G2 ribbon approach, many cross is successfully WAY lower than I can get.. 2500hz is pushing it big time with a G2..albiet I havent tried real steep active,..I retract anything I said about having this 3-way OB dialed.. it isn't..Something intresting is..When I pulled all filters & such including disconnect of G2 & ran direct to B200 with 300B in PP, BASH plates still doinf OB bass duty,,Bass integration has been extremely easy for me,, never a problem , I go 150hz 4th active. ..I took all PLLXO off to..intresting enough I moved my baffle a buch of times which I don't do much..OB is extremely picky on position..extremmely. I moved within 18" of back wall & slight toe in..treble beam isn't bothering me.. it is nice. I haven't ran clean since I went to 18" baffle & moved bass drivers farther aprt from B200..I am sure I can sweeten it up even more with a decent EQ..If I can run a DAC, I can certainly run a EQ..I am also going active for further ribbon or Heil AMT 3-way..OB experiments..I am building a all tube 27 IDHT & 26 DHT pre, should be finished by years end. & will want to use them..so PLLXO might not be even feasable..I have tube active boards I could build up & try also, Steve Bench desighn..But that is on back burner.. I will just get a simple or build simple active unit..& go from there..I tell my wife that Supravox Alnico OB drivers would be a nice Christmas present..of course she is laughing...Open baffle has changed my hole outlook on audio fun for the better....let me know how the Heil AMT thing goes, I am very curiouse..
I hear ya. When I was using open baffles a good EQ was almost a must.
That, plus Bold Eagle's suggestions on where to apply EQ, made a big difference.
