Though I'd like to get my wife to help me listen to various systems, it just doesn't happen that often. As it happens I have 3 systems set up right now, and I was able to talk her into spending some time comparing with me this evening. Might have something to do with me making dinner, and a nice wine. Anyway, system 1) 45 SET amp, tube based pre, speakers are open baffle EV sp-12 w/sub. System 2) EL34 SET, Edgar Horn mids w/Altec drives, Altec super tweeter, JBL 2226 base in 3ft enclosure. System 3) EL84 PP (triode wired) using Heathkit AA-151 OPT and 12Ax7 drivers, plus 12AU7 preamp and a pair of clone Dynaco A25's (updated cross and tweeters). System 3 is in a smaller room, 1 and 2 are in a larger room. Same CD in all cases. Clear winner, System 3 the "vintage" system. Damn. How can the least expensive, least thought out system win the contest. What did I think? Well, #3 does sound great. I guess I'd pick #1 In the larger room, but I have to admit, vocals sound pretty nice in #3. By the way, our song we tried in all the setups is my new favoriate Julie London, Cry Me A River.
Follow Ups:
Everyone should have some
I have a refurbished Pilot 402 receiver, four EL84 output tubes, 17Watts, in my bedroom system and I am constantly amazed at just how good it sounds.
WAF = system sound (divided by) system size.
Don't forget about room acoustics, they can make a big difference. Not a valid test if the systems are in different rooms.
Always did like Julie London, Cry Me A River! You and the wife should also listen to Pasty Cline singing Faded Love or any other of her slow songs!Right now for some reason I like the sound from my Superscope system which includes a
T 210 Tuner
A 235 Amp
CDR 302 A Tape Deck
TD 28 8 Track Deck
Toshiba CD player
and last but not least
for speakers I'm using ZENITH Allegro 3's!
Still looking for a Turntable for it!Brian
That's rich. LOL.A perfect band name for a female/feminist country punk band. So obvious;wonder if it's been claimed?
..The little KINGS!!!! ;~)
They are Mullard. The amp uses AA-151 iron, as I mentioned. The phase splitting is via CCS - a differential input stage. No feedback, triode strapped on the EL84s.
I liked your story. What a dilemna. LOL.The Mullards are first class, too, of course but if you want a possible improvement try some GE oval greyplates, mark 155-8. They really surprised me. They're still affordable for OS, relatively speaking.
Boy, is your testing procedure flawed, or what.If you want to test the intelligence of a dog, you watch the dog when a car comes by on the street. When a car comes down the street, all cats and all stupid dogs watch the nearest corner of the vehicle as it passes by. All smart dogs look at the driver.
When wives see sound systems, they only look at the speakers. So, your testing precedure offered your wife the option of two 3cuft boxes full of crap, two 2x4ft panels with crap smeared on them and a 2cuft box full of crap in between them, or two 1cuft boxes full of crap that she already knows will fit in a smaller room.
Funny, but many times our wives make good audio dicisions.
Well, okay, the testing was a bit flawed. But the point was that sometimes simpler is better, or at least as good. The big speakers are in my basement space, by the way, and while I'm sure she isn't completely neutral, she doesn't care too much what happens down there.
