It looks like it has a fulton label on it where it says FMI and that was Bob fulton's signature label even tho ARC made them.
Anyway from looking at this and the idea behind it I wouldnt think it would have a SS sound but the first thing I would do of course is put in paper in oil caps like vit Qs or k40s or Jensens and then I would reinstall the gz34.Those seem like very nice amps and I like the 6FQ7 drivers and the oa2 regulators.Screen grid regulators are going to be more common place in PP amps in the future I think because they do produce such amazing results.Again these are very nice amps for what they are.

Ah, interesting. I am a newb to vintage (sounds like an oxymoron) and appreciate the recommendations. Could you elaborate on "I would reinstall the gz34"? I see from tubedata.org that that's a rectifier. Wondering what it is about that?I only wish that they were 'amps' (plural) as you mention, but unfortunately there was only one. :( The person selling it had been looking for a mate for years; I guess finally gave up.
The reason I was thinking of more is, I'm tri-amping my front 3 speakers (Klipsch La Scala that I'll only end up using the bass horn from them, which I'm giving a shot-gun wedding to, mating to full sized and mini smith horns for mid and tweeter with JBL drivers). I purchased some medium/high power Dukane amps for 2 of the midrange (this amp for the center) and 3 'low' power 6V6 Bell & Howell amps for tweeters. So why I'm thinking of 'cloning' this amp is, for one, I think I'll be happier with this amp then the Dukanes (have to hear to know tho), and I don't think the Bell & Howell amps will be enough power. 6 of these amps would be pretty nice me thinks for driving both mid and tweeter.

Being these were based on the dynaco mk3s,I think its fitting to put the tube rectifier back in..It doesnt have to be a gz34..It can be a 5u4 or 274b or whatever you want..I like the tube rectified sound and it seems whenever someone removes it,it deems to dry up the sound and give it a 2 dimensional posture.
Your lascalas you dont need to triamp but you might consider low powered amps..Being your speakers are very efficient,I would look at a nice el84 amp or a 300b amp PP or SE respectively.
Thanx for the reply. It may be beyond my ability at this time [I can see me changing only resistors and caps and connector], but Noted.hehehe, that ship has sailed regarding tri-amping tho. I know I don't 'have' to. But after measuring Impedance of the speaker and seeing that the midrange region goes to 32 ohms, and time alignment differences of the bass / mid / tweeter, and so many on the Klipsch board saying 'whatever you do run away from that K401 horn!' ... I decided to change the mid and tweeter drivers and horns and tri-amp with time-alignment, to see just what I can get. The amount of time alignment called for on the tweeter warranted going digital to me.
Additionally, I've recently contracted-for or purchased a lot of used, vintage, or new but vintage style, gear:
- a center La Scala bass horn from a craftsman who frequents the Klipsch message board
- a beautiful full-sized custom Smith Horn made out of Walnut for center as well as three mini-Smith walnut horns all from another craftsman who frequents the Altec heritage board
- two larger then normal Smith clones with the baffle for 500Hz operation (for left and right)
- drivers being 2 JBL 2445 and 1 2447 driver for midrange on the full-sized smith horns, and 3 2402 tweeter drivers for the mini-Smith horns. (I do at times like to get to silly loud levels when I watch the Cream DVD or other great music as an example)
- I've recently purchased a total of 8 vintage tube amps ; I'll be using the one ARC Classic 150 monoblock I have left that didn't burn out in the lightning strike I got hit by.
- (not vintage or used) I purchased a new BSS Prosys processor (10-in 10-out unit) which I'll be using for crossover and time-alignment (perhap minimal equalization if necessary), in a 3-in 9-out configuration. So while I know I don't 'have' to tri-amp; it was either upgrade the crossover and try for 'physical' time alignment leading to other reflection issues, or go all out. Like I'm apt to do I chose the latter.
[you should see what I did to my lovely car] If I'm worried about any one thing, it's the amount of -heat- I'll be making and current I'll be drawing with all those tube amps!
