How do they differ in regards to use with a Sherwood S-5000 with 20 watts?
Follow Ups:
The one with 6bq5s and the GZ34 rectifier tube or the one with 7868s? Both are fabulous and will sound rich and energetic with a few upgrades.
I have a pair of these. Is it a problem to run them as the B speakers with a pair of 8 ohms as the A's?
Probably, depending on the amp. That's a nominal 2.6 ohm load, pretty tough for most receivers and power amps. The 20 is listed as 4 ohms, but the tweeter and crossover are the same as the KLH 17, the 8 ohm version; so the 20 is only 4 ohms below 1500 Hz. Of course, that's where most of the energy is.A late model NAD integrated is rated to 2 ohms and most of the Onkyo Integra line is rated to 2 ohms. But not much else is.
I had both 17's and 20's at the same time a couple of years ago.The 20's were really rough cosmetically but sounded decent on anything I tried them with (including a NAD 3020). On my Sugden A28B they sounded incrediby good.
My 17's were much better cosmetically but did not sound near as good.
I would not conclude that 17's are necessarily worse. It could have just been a problem (eg in the crossover) with the pair I had.
I would conclude that the 20's are not as hard to drive as the rating suggests and with the right match, they can sound terrific.
David,Between aging caps and the cloth woofer surround getting porous, they can sound pretty bad. Happily, it doesn't take much to bring them back, just a litle labor and a few dollars worth of parts.
It should be pretty much the same as the 17 as long as you can run it off 4 ohm taps. I assume the Sherwood probably has 4 ohm taps. Also you might want to replace the RCA jack on the back of the 20's with something easier to use. It's a PIA making decent speaker cables with RCA plugs.
Enjoy
Gary
