I've had a Marantz Model 18 sitting in my cabinet for years. It was replaced by a Proceed PAV and Amp 2 in my main system. Now I have 2 PAVs, 2 Amp 2s, a PDSD, and an Amp 3. The Marantz still sits in the cabinet. It cost an entire month of my post doc stipend, and I used to love watching the scope. But I don't have a place to set it up and feel a bit guity with such a good sounding receiver sitting around unused.Wonder what you folks do with such gear.

That'll help you to prioritize! Right now, I feel like cutting back on my possessions until they'd all fit into the back of a Mini Cooper. Sick and tired of hauling heavy objects up and down the stairs already (no elevators in these apartments). I've thought more than once about ripping the music collection to a hard drive, and just having a music server, a small tube stereo integrated amp and speakers: No outboard power supplies, no monoblocks and other clutter.
18's even in good condition are selling for under $200 right now. Hold onto it and you will either get a better price of decide to keep it. I really don't use mine very much either. But I SURE like having it in the displace area with my other stereo gear. It sits right next to my Marantz 2252b silver faced beauty and my McIntosh C-26. OOOOOHHHHHHHH the pretty lights look nice. But really hold onto it a little longer. The 18 is WAY under valued right now. Find yourself a good preamp like a Mac c-28 or something like that.
If you still like it, keep it. Turn it on a few times a year, for both nostalgic reasons and to keep the parts alive.
When you tire of it, sell it on ebay, or here, if the classifieds start working again. If you live in the northeast, there is a great venue coming up, to bring the classic gear. It's the DVHRC sponsored Antique Radio Show in Kutztown, PA May 11-12, 2007.
Joining an antique radio club might be helpful as well, as many of them let you list your tradeables in their newsletters very reasonably. Happy Listening...
I have stuff I just enjoy looking at...even if I don't use it.But if you must seek closure, feel free to store you Model 18 in my extra special virtual storage facility.....
Asylum classifieds or AudioGon. Someone will give it a good home. I've long thought that the Asylum classifieds would be improved it it had a section devoted to vintage gear.
I swore that I would never part with that preamp.I bought an SP-6A last year and after it's restoration I haven't used my SP-3 since. The SP-6A mates with my system better than I thought I would.
So after a year of non-HiFi use in the living room (I have and will again just use a vintage recciver in the living room, my wife and five year old daughter don't care as long as there is a working stereo out there).
I made the decision to sell it. It went quickly. I miss it already.

Hi,I amassed a whole bunch of stuff that I don't currently use. I've got two large bookcase like shelves full of stuff including a minty SP3a-1, my first ARC product the SP8 bought new, a Marantz 7,8b &5's, a real neat Counterpoint head amp SA2, citation II...you get the idea!!
I seriously thought of putting alot of the items up for sale this past weekend because they are rarely used and the clutter is getting to me. I'd hate to feel bad about selling some of them but they are part of over 25yrs of collecting and most are "classic" pieces. At some point I guess you have to do it. I suspect I'll feel better selling them off than to know my wife sells them at a garage sale for $5!
I'm sure you get over it soon...and I suppose you can always buy one back...goodluck
1 of those preamps that once you sell it, you regret it. May nt be the clinical straight wire with gain that predominates the market today but it keeps the musical emotion the the clinical preamps strip out.
I purchased a Mac MX-110 from the owner of the stereo shop where I worked while in engineering school. In a fit of "hate those tube things", I sold it along with a Thorens TD-124/SME arm/Ortofon SPU cart for beer money - well, almost: it was rent money.Until I picked up an MX-110 about 4 years ago, I hated the moment I did such insanity.
So, the question is, what is to be done with older gear as one upgrades in various ways? What I do now, is to rotate them through my system. I've got a couple of shelves of stuff, now, as a result.
So, for me, the bigger question is, what do you do when the shelves fill up? I don't have an answer to that one.....
I do know that I don't want to have the regrets I had 30 years ago.
Cheers,
All the crap in my living (on top of the record shelves) has to go to my father's place for now- we're selling the house and the agent suggested reducing the clutter. How many people get that Extreme Makeover attitude thing from RS Agents now?

When the shelves get filled up, add more shelves. Build more rooms to accommodate your collection. The laundry room always has room for more shelves, right ?
One of my friends bathrooms is truly his reading room. He must have 500 magazines on hifi in there. Can you imagine the rest of his house ? Huge speakers make excellent room dividers, and shelf stands, not to mention great places to store amps on top.
Many years ago, I used to restore amps on my dining room table. My loving wife made me put a u-build-it workbench in our bedroom ! We've since moved to larger quarters, simply to accommodate my obsession with classic hifi gear.
