Let's see:
Yamaha T-2 for $191
Missed kenwood 5020 - I wouldn't go $443
Dual 1264 no sylus -great otherwise for $57
Snell J's - $87.00 -needed refoaming
Bryston Remote A60 -no remote small scratches on top $643
Sony 6060 -9/10 wood case $93 -fm stereo just gave up the ghost
Marantz 6000 tuner with box -remote-cablea $113
Most failures were because i bid too low or too late
or crazy bidding took place
I guess i've been lucky
with clowns who didn't ship or the stuff wasn't as listed
Yes I do use Paypal
but my spending spree is over - have to sell off other stuff
to pay for my habit
Garage or curb finds are still the best deals
but I doubt if I would have found the T-2 or Bryston that way
Follow Ups:
Sometimes its just dumb luck
today PSB Alpha's for $25.00
done well with camera gear too-
Nikon and Minolta only
Be sure to connect to half.com - their sister company
they have excellent prices on books-cd's movies- a lot of which
are new -unopened overstock - or "read once" consumer owned
that are "flipped" regularly
Picked up 2 Titleist 905 Ts for under 185 each. 3 dozen Pro V1s grade 4A used for around $50.Oh, I'm sorry this is the vintage "audio" forum. My bad, its starting to warm up in Central IL.
I scored a beautiful Marantz 2250B (buy it now) for 200.00 with nearly all electrolytics replaced as well as dial lamps. I even received a package containing the old caps and a bunch of screws which were also replaced. My last purchase was a beautiful pioneer SX828 for 100.00 but it blew an output transistor when I powered it up. I am rebuilding the amp. Considering the outstanding cosmetic condition it was still worth 100.00 providing it works properly when I'm done with the amp. Ebay is somewhat of a gamble.
Bought all my Superscope equipment off of EBAY aexcept the AMP and I don't feel like I have been cheated at all!Brian
About 90% successes. I get outbid about 90% of the time. The other 10% are about 90% learning experiences and 10% science fiction.
Ive been lucky there. But i only sell there. I get my goods dirt cheap from thrift stores and yard sales. But i`m also the kind of seller that sells excellent merchandise and packs it like it should be packed. Made allot of people happy there and made some money doing it.
By the way i just picked up a T-2 at a thrift store for 15 bucks,
Going to hang onto it though..It sounds really nice. Just have to figure how to open it up to change the bulbs.
Great find BTW on T-2
look up T-2 in search here-I seemed to
recall someone talking about taking T-2 aprt to replace bulbs
The bay can be a good resource, but you must remember to bid against the world value, not just flea market values, if you want to win. It is hard to win the good, vintage gear. Americans generally do not value music and musical equipment like so many other cultures.
Ask yourselves if you have enlightened the next generation that tubes might sound better and that LPs are excellent sounding on a good system. These are simple facts that Asians and Europeans seem to naturally continue the obsession. The DIY market in the USA is soft compared to an ever-growing market throughout Asia, especially in Japan and Korea. Some outstanding output transformers are being made in China, as well as tubes. But, that is for another thread...Just remeber, you are bidding against the world. What we, in the USA, think is common, might be rare overseas.
The bay is not fun; it is actually like work, finding and selling.
What I can say about the bay, that keeps me going, is that more and more rare gear has popped up there, although slowly. If you check Audiogon, prices are staggering, but newer high end gear is easily found. Vintage gear on ebay can be easier to find, but it might still not be affordable to us. For newer collectors, the hifi search is an expensive one...
Excelent summary
ebay is work
I used to think if you can buy it right
you can sell it right
All rules of the free market are susspended
here- since bidding can be contra-crazy
to perceived or even actual value...
Sometimes you get a good buy- but mostly
it might be fair at best
I have done much better in flea markets-auctions
garage sales and te like - thrift stores
in the Boston area are usually stripped clean
brfore i get there
