In Reply to: Just got a Fisher Futura tube console - has anyone worked with these amps? posted by PeterI on March 9, 2007 at 06:44:16:
30-40 WPC is more like it. Fisher used PP 7591s in the 400, 500C, and 800C receivers. You might be lucky enough to have the same "iron".IMO, that BIC TT is not so crummy. It does require a weight type record clamp, as "reflex" clamps will pull the spindle out. Perhaps your unit has a crappy ceramic cart. on it.

I believe the amp is a 680A...The output iron is smaller than the 400's etc., but not by much. I've never experienced one in it's original console situation, but they make excellent stand alone amps (Hey, It's a Fisher)! Or, use with the existing console preamp/tuner for a very good phono stage and preamp for not a lot of money usually. The speakers when put in a free standing cabinet sound surprisingly good.
Anyway, I have the Schematic for the Fisher Futura IV. If that's your model and you want copies for it, send me your email url...I'm at Blaney2@hotmail.com...and I'll send them to you.
I think you're wise not to part it out right away...It will need some electronic upgrades, but if you can come up with a decent TT for it...I think you'd have a piece that would give you a great deal of listening pleasure. Walt
Thanks for info. The radio control face only says Futura, not IV, but maybe they are similar. This Preamp/tuner #490-T has 6- 12ax7 and a couple 6AU6. Yes, I plan to use the amp and preamp together, in a cabinet of my own making. This wood cabinet is pretty beat up, and I'd rather use modern speakers, separated by more than 3 feet, the way this console was.More research I did today suggests that the amp can't be used alone (with say, another pre) unless you alter the circuit slightly. It has normal RCA pre input jacks. But there's another harness connecting the pre/tuner and amp.
I am astonished at how good the FM sounds - in the past, old consoles' FM never worked right. It has the 'tuning eye' tube.

Wait for the schematics Tuubvac is sending and see for sure. It may be very easy to use the power amp with non-Fisher upstream stuff; just connect up the RCA jacks.

Yup! The schematic I have is for the 490T and the 680 A amp. I've used the 680A paired with a 100T tuner/preamp driving 4@ XP9C speakers as my main system. I've auditioned a lot of equipment since, and nothing sounds as good so far. Anyway, I got to keep an appointment this evening so I will send you those files in the morning. Later, Walt
A friend of mine has one of these amps and has been looking for a schematic (I don't recall if he has the tuner). I'd appreciate a copy - tbavis(at)rochester(dot)rr(dot)com
Thank you.
