Curious if anyone has run across custom cardboard boxes for vintage components? Specifically looking for packing boxes for my Fisher and Scott tube integrates. I thought someone would be producing something along these lines, maybe with a foam insert that could be cut to match your component, but I can't find anything online.

This question pops up from time to time...and people do not seem to realize the amount of money that is needed to have a custom size box made. Add to the fact that you would need many different sizes to "custom" fit everything and you realize quite quickly why no one has done this. Also who is going to make a custom box without a large minimum order??? Do you want to lay out the money (and the space to store) to order hundreds if not thousands of boxes that may or may not sell???I spoke with someone who had the original AR XA turntable box made...and he spent oodles of money on having 200 made. But he plans on selling completely restored models at a premium and the original box (with printing) was key.
Companies like Fisher and Scott had an entire staff designing their boxes and packing material, and the main concern was keeping costs down on shipping tens of thousands (if not hundreds of thousands)of units. On a small scale it is a lot easier (and cost effective) to utilize heavy duty double wall boxes, bubble wrap, and packing peanuts in order to pack up units. Companies like U-Line make a variety of boxes that are perfect fit for vintage hi-fi and only cost about $2.00-$5.00 each which is a lot cheaper than the moving and storage supply places and the UPS store in my neck of the woods charge. The UPS store in my area charges $9.00 for a box you can buy from U-Line for $1.50 and my local Moving and Storage place charges $3.50 for.
Your local UPS Store has boxes is a wide variety of sizes.
Great question.
I've got stuff I should sell, but no boxes, eh?
I've been told to check the yellow pages for corrugators, IIRC
OH, Boxes--corrugated & fiber.
In my yellow pages, small city, 250,000.
Thanks for all the suggestions guys. I did stumble across a custom box dealer that plastic boxes and foam inserts:http://www.custommadeboxes.com/plastic_corrugated_boxes.html
Thinking out loud here... you could use a less dense foam layer around the component and then a more rigid foam layer on the outside.
This is starting to sound like a lot of work and a standard Acme J-11 corrugated box and bubble wrap may still be the best option!
