Show me the cd player that does this and I will buy it! The 2 types of source media are different. But, by and large, analog wins. It's simply true. At least if you listen to acoustic material, not amplified. Even with pop or rock, analog is audibly superior in many ways. That would be using a stock Thorens TD 165 and TP 11 with a Shure, AT or Stanton cartridge of appropriate level, adjusted to taste and synergy.
Follow Ups:
I don't deny that, on the right system. Analog can and does give better sound on SOME systems. All I'm saying is it takes a lot of knowledge and a pretty sizable amount of cash to get to that point. Digital gets people most of the way easily and more cheaply. For the average Joe it's a more attractive medium, even if analog does have the potential to sound better, the bang-for-the-buck ratio declines after a certain point.
"But, by and large, analog wins. It's simply true."Opinion passed off as fact. Nothing is "simply true" in this hobby.
Digital with my rig, at least redbook, generally sounds flattened, unnatural with respect to air and sense of space, etc. vs. analog.People not into audio, hearing the different formats never debate. They always hear the difference and like analog. To reiterate, I would love a digital rig which is clearly better than my analog one, which is affordable, under or equal to 1K US.

1 "T" Amp ($29.99 http://www.partsexpress.com/pe/showdetl.cfm?&Partnumber=300-952 )
Your Cyberhome DVD playerFor the guy with money to burn, pick up one of Dennis Murphy's mod kits for the Insignias, go for the Hi-End digital T amp at PE (about $139 http://www.partsexpress.com/pe/showdetl.cfm?&Partnumber=300-956 ), and check the digital forum for the latest round of mods to the Toshiba 39XX series of players. I've lost track of the current Tosh-mod threads.
The Toshs are more reliable than the Cyberhomes, and having bigger cases, led themselves to experimental upgrades.
The Insignias, basically a sibling to the speakers built by Radiient
www.radiient.com, which in themselves are a low-$ knockoff of a coax design used by KEF.This setup is not going to play loud since both amps are only rated at 10wpc, but the guys claim that the quality is pretty comparable to
what you would get from a high end low-wattage tube system.Indeed, a "vinyl" guy into low-wattage tube amps would probably have the most fun playing around with this stuff.
