... have one or know about them?
Follow Ups:
The same basic unit as the 3000x but with more features that never worked all that well. The first time I tried to use the sound-on-sound feature I got a cloud of smoke and a burning smell. Repeated trips to the Tandberg facility in Armonk NY never really fixed the problem, unfortunately. The unit make great recordings at all its available speeds...7.5, 3.75 and even at 1 7/8 ips. My biggest quibbles with the unit were mechanical- the tape clutches seemed to spill tape a lot and they were hard to keep adjusted....and the transport was kind of noisy. It was a nice unit...but it's one of the few pieces I've owned that I don't miss having today.
Perhaps your simpler machine will work better than mine did....MAK
I have had one since about 1974, and when I used it regularly, I was quite pleased with it's sound, both recording and playback. It has a nice relaxed sound without any edge and I never felt the need to add Dolby or DBX nr, pretty good bass, too, but it is no Ampex or Revox. IIRC, playback speed stability was never an issue, but rewind and FF are not quite as fast as most. BTW, there is no auto shut off with this machine. Overall, it is a nice "no frills" RR.It uses a fairly "clunky" manual transmission for the transport functions, but mine never had any problems other than the rubber spindle caps loosing their tension, which required that the deck be used with the reels horizontal. I wouldn't be a bit surprised if your caps have the same problem.
I haven't operated mine in years and probably never will again, so if you want a spare for parts, let me know.
...taken it out of the car yet. Have to get it by the wife ; )
...the 3000X is about the most compact 7" RR I have seen. Smuggle it in under your coat.
All I could find at Phantom Productions' catalog page around 1970 is the 6000XThe "X" means it has crossfield heads :-)

I picked up a Tandberg 6000X not too long ago, as soon as I get a good %$^#^% pinch roller for the thing, I'll let you know how it sounds! :)BT
(yes, the pinch roller is going to be on its way to Terry's place soon)
