I am moving out of my office into a home office
need to create more space...Looking for the best
smaller form factor receiver with great FM AND
phono section..Have tried Advent receiver- but
the FM had terrible reception. My Sony 6060 FM
stereo section just died and thought it might be
agood time to go a little smaller..I was thinking
HK 730/930 ...Any feedback ?
Follow Ups:
Best receiver I've ever used. Very decent tuner and the best high power amp in a receiver. Period.for more efficient speakers go with a Scott 399 and a multiplexer for stereo fm.
I've used both.
Thanks - will check out all the suggestions
I always loved the rosewood cabinets and blue lights
of the Tandberg receivers ...
The HK730 is my favorite vintage receiver, matches unbelievably with a pair of JBL 4313Bs in my current setup, but it suffers from poor FM sensitivity, it only comes on in stereo on very strong stations, quite nice when it does, though. Agree, a Proton powered speaker would be hard to beat for compact FM.
Two that come to mind that have not mentioned are Denon and Proton. Both are nice.
Denons are very reliable and you can often get a good moving coil input. They can be a little large but the champagne colored receivers with the fake rosewood end caps look very nice.Protons are compact and very good performers. They are very powerful for their size. Tuners and phono sections are very good on them too.
A Scott or Niko receiver could also fit the bill. The Japanese Scott receivers of the 70's are overlooked but nice. Niko's are very well built and usually compact.

Later Gator,
Crank up your talking machine, grab a jar of your favorite "kick-back", sit down, relax, and let the good times roll.
I have one and there are no reception problems. The tuner is sensitive enough and can pick up PBS Buffalo from Toronto with only a Dipole. At the price they are going for a HK 430 would be a very inexpensive and good choice or maybe a Rotel for a more modern piece.
The 730 has nice power amps, a decent (but not great) tuner, and a somewhat bright sounding preamp. I know a lot of guys like them, but I thought the Sherwoods sounded better. How about something like an Adcom GTP-400 tuner-preamp and an Adcom power amp like the GFA-5300. Footprint is 17" x 12" and only about 7.5" tall if stacked. Very nice FM, a good phono section, and ample power.
If you really want a receiver, consider the Tandbergs.
The problem with the more compact receivers is that about the time that receivers started getting more compact, they also started getting more cheaply made and many won't drive a 4 ohm load. Some of the later Onkyo Integra series are very good, but they tend to be BIG. My TX-870 is 17" wide, but nearly 18" deep.
Especially the tuner section.
I'll "third" the Tandbergs. The TR-10XX series is smaller (and cheaper) used than the TR-20XX series.I have a TR-1040 that I really enjoy, and at 40 wpc, it has enough power to drive any speaker I own.
