and no pre-amp for it.
I don't think the Audiosource has a phono input, so you'd still need a phono stage.
I have an Audiosource Amp One that I used for a while, then gave to my daughter. It was a decent unit, if that's any help.

...get one of those modern turntables at Circuit City or Best Buy (100-125 or so) that has a built-in phono pre-amp!Did I really say that???
I have heard absolutely zero mentioned here as to how these units fare in competition with vintage turntables. Aside from the pro-vintage bias of this board, I suspect no one here has tried one. Maybe someone now will dare come out of the woodwork.
I just looked at Circuit City Web site. There is actually quite a selection varying in price from $100 to $374
(there was only one or two cheap ones when I looked a year or two ago)
Unlike vintage speakers, the job of a turntable is to rotate vinyl smoothly and quietly. So long as the turntable can do that, its age shouldnt matter. Am I missing something here, or could that $374 model (link below) with preamp be pretty competitive with higher-end vintage turntables in terms of overall quality. It not only plays 78's, it plays records in reverse (all the better to find hidden satanic messages!)
I really don't see the point of shelling out that kind of money on something new when the trift stores a practically giving away much better turntables.
Depends where you live! Our local Goodwill, usually sells Turntables,no matter what conditon or brand from $19.99 to $59.99!
Sadly most do not have the Stlus or dustcover!Just about a month ago they had a Technics with no power cord,no headshell or cartridge, cracked dustcover asking price $29.99! When I asked about it,I was told that was a far price for a good turntable and you can get the parts from EBAY or Radio Shack and have a heck of a nice turntable and you know it!That's when I said to myself, there crazy not me! Brian
There was a $30.00 Technics like that next to the Linn LP12 that I bought for $26. The Linn was missing a belt so they thoght it was broken. Technics are often overpriced because the people that work in these places have heard of them with regard to DJ tables. They've never heard of a Micro-Seki!
I live in Silver Spring Maryland, just outside of DC. I have over 10 turntables probably close to 20. (I'm not sure of the number.) I have some very lofty brands!
as I live in DC and have never seen a decent table in an area thrift store.
Do you get out into the suburbs? Are you a record collector?
I have thought about for some time on this turntable Audio Technica LP-to-Digital Recording System (AT-LP2D)!Glad you brought this subject up! I'm sure there are better choices out there, but at this price and the fact that I could put some of my LP'S or 45'S on Cd is tempting as well! My Superscope is not Super high end but it is not junk either and I think overall would fit my needs for the Superscope!
I have 2 Technics turntables, both in need of exspensive stylus and have to be ordered out where our Radio Shack can get replacement stylus for the AT-LP2D for around $20.00 + tax! I also feel that the panasonic Stereo I got for my daughter sounded good to our ears, and this new turntable should be as good or maybe slightly better! Thanks again for posting this and if I do invest in this turntable in the near future you will be the first to know the results good or bad!Brian
A decent phono stage isn't cheap. Sure some guys say the battery powered rat shack thing for a few bucks is fine but the bottlehead seduction totally blows it out of water, as it will the solid state ones in the 70's units. The plinth on the new turntables are very light. The tone armes are very poor. If you want a new turntable get a technics sl1200. NAD and Music Hall also offer(d) new low priced turntables. At that price level I like the technics. You need to spend about 2k to walk out the door with something nice nowadays (VPI scout/dynavector).
So yes, the vintage thorens is hard to beat.
Built it two years ago.
I use it right now, run the phono through the Seduction into the receiver's aux input. The back up TT runs through the phono input.
I bought one of the Rat Shack units just for shits and giggles and just about any decent phono stage blows it away.
