im going passive pre autoformer vc and the philips 910 cdp is just overdriving the tvc.i have a philips 960 cdp that does the same thing.
the little portable philips unit sounds just fine with analog out direct to the autoformer vc.
is it maybe an impedance mismatch problem ?
the sound is all distorted even on the first step of the autoformer vc.
Follow Ups:
If your really overdriving the inputs of the TVC preamp, U may want to reduce the CD players fixed output by installing some in-line attenuators such as those from Harrison Labs. Then again, 2 volts from the CD player should NOT be overdriving the TVC's inputs and if it is, would point to an autoformer problem.

what cheaperic was suggesting.
I wouldn't think that the full scale output of the 910 and 960 is any greater than the Red Book standard of 2 volts RMS. And if your autoformer's being overloaded with just 2 volts, I'd look at getting something of better quality assuming the one you have now isn't broke or wired up wrong.Do you have the manuals for the 910 and 960? If so, do the specs give the full scale output for the players?

headphone output it works just fine with the tvc even at maximum output.an installer friend of mine called me a few weeks ago to say that a denon cdp was overloading a 2nd-zone amplifier that it was driving directly and wanted to know how to attenuate it.
i pointed him to the fmod attenuators but wanted to do a better solder-resistor-in-the-cdp job for my application.
im starting to think its an impedance problem because the tvc i am using is a generic in-wall that sees full amplifier output and attenuates that.
and the fact that it is 2 900 series philips cdp is also making me think that.
hmmm.............maybe its not --enough-- voltage at the cdp outputs ?
Try slotting in a 100k linear pot between your TVC and your player's outputs. Play with the linear pot until you get clean sound out of your TVC that can still be strong enough to drive your amps; measure the resistance at the linear pot and plug that same value into your player's outputs via high quality resistors (matched, of course!).If that still doesn't work, maybe the TVC is bad???
its playing right now.hmmm............just had a thought.
i know that the cd960 had an internal volume control and im wondering if this wasnt maxed and causing the distortion.
the cd910 didnt come with a remote so i dont know if it has an internal vc or not.
ill have to hook-up the cd960 and play with the internal vc and see if that is what the problem was.
then maybe i can see about getting a code for the cd 910 for the universal remote and maybe turn it down if it has an internal vc.
