Hi Tom,
There has been some arguments on whether the Catheral Sound Panels "work"?From the graphs, it seems they lower the volume of bass frequency. What's your view as an user. I think both you and myself are not techies, so we go by "the proof of the pudding is in the eating".
Cheers
Follow Ups:
Lona,Imagine a boxer 60 pounds past his prime. He steps into the ring, and as he walks, his rolls of fat bounce, jiggle, and gyrate. It's hard to tell what kind of body exists under those 60 pounds of excess baggage.
Now imagine a boxer at his prime -- his lean physique shows not an ounce of fat, and it's very clear exactly what's going on with his musculature.
So it is with the Cathedral Sound Panels. Prior to the installation, the sound was like the overweight boxer -- bloated and indistinct, the blubber masking the finely tuned muscles that were hiding underneath. After the installation, the sound was "at its prime" ... every sound was now audible, and nothing was covered up by too many pounds of bass.
If the panels only diminished the entire range of sound, the listener would ostensibly turn up the volume more than prior to the installation to arrive at THE EXACT SAME SOUND BALANCE AND LISTENING EXPERIENCE. Not so! The ratios are different, with the bass bloat being shaved away, revealing all the other frequencies and instruments much more clearly and evenly.
As to the bass being reduced, I go back to the boxer analogy. Yes, a leaner bass is now in the room, but it is much truer and more muscular -- less bloated and overwhelming, and much more effective.
Hope this helps.
And I'd like to echo what other posters have said about magnets. I tried a 1/4" x 1" round magnet on top of the CD player, just to the right of the CD drawer. WOW!!! An amazing change in soundstage (depth especially) and air around instruments, as well as an even more natural timbre all around!
I now have to tear myself away from the listening position ... something I haven't had to do since the early days of listening in my former house.
Chears! (pun intended!)
I agree with this description.Last week I received 4 Cathedral Sound Room Damping Panels (fast shipping to Italy). I noted the same effects: more controlled bass (but it's there, it does not disappear) and much clearer midrange response and scene focus. It's the first time that I use damping panels, but I can hear a significant difference. Room treatment can save you a lot of money from upgrading to more expensive electronics.
I have my system in a squarish room and I added some tweaks: some foam on the back wall near the head (I have a sofa attached to the back wall), some foam behind the hifi rack on the front wall, and a weith of 10kg on the basis of each target hifi speaker stand. I also employed suitable cables (custom Quadlinks for my Quad electronics). My rack shelves are made up of a layer of polyurethane and linden (tilia) wood, and I put a round weight of 5kg on the top of the Cd chassis exactly centered on the Cd spindle. This is to say that it's not a single tweak that works but the whole combination.

I'm glad I'm not the only one who has tried these panels! Welcome to the club, Robert!
Hi Tom,
Thanks for your boxing analogy! I know what you mean! ;p
I have ordered a few pairs myself too. I'll see how it goes when they have arrived and been installed.
I will ring the bell and "do a commentary" when the round starts!
Cheers!
Great! I look forward to your ringside commentary! (And I must confess I'm curious to find out what your experience with these puppies is...:-)
sorry if you posted this info prior.good analogy & excellent use of magnets!
in the past year or so i've treated the room, purchased a great amp and preamp and finalized the tweaks on my TT. the acoustic treatments were by far the best $ spent.
the cdp magnet by far the best free tweak.
:-)
