In my continuing quest to outfit my sons with quality gear while, at the same, involving them when possible in the process of building stuff with me for each other, I am considering a speaker pair kit. These would be used in a system with SS power using both analog and digital front ends. Music preferences range from classic rock, to jazz, to vocalists, to techno, to harder rock - but very little or no heavy head banger stuff, heavy bass rap, or classical. I am thinking floorstanders would be best.I'd like to find the best possible kit with parts running $1K or less and which feature cabinet plans (at least dimension). We are fully capable of constructing the cabinets. Any suggestions welcome, including any better venues in which to post this question. ;-) Thank you in advance.
Follow Ups:
The Madisound Froy III kit is a bit over your 1 grand price at around $1200. Butit is a superb small speaker with tight bass into the mid 40s, flat response, and high quality parts. It does appear to be a bit on the 'white' side of flat balance wise which can be a problem with some commercially bright software but that's the nature of the beast. I used a custom made set for years and now use them as mid/tweeter modules crossed around 85 hz to 18" woofers. And I rarely hear speakers that make even consider changing.
The GR Research speakers are very good values. Another value that is truely high end and worth considering is from Selah Audio, the Peridot. If you don't want the Seas Excel mid, the Nextel version could be used for a slightly warmer tonal presentation through the mids. I have built the RC3R, custom center and sub from Selah, all tremendous values imho.http://selahaudio.com/id96.html
These first two have loyal followings, and you can read what others say at www.audioroundtable.com where each have a forum:Brines Acoustics LT-2000 with Fostex

Don't know if you've checked these guys out, but they offer a number of different kits. I've never heard them myself but have read many good things about them.

You know you go to Lost Wages

Check out Audio Note kit 2 ($1050 without the cab ). I know , I know what all the people think of AN but I heard this with SS amp and it really delivers goods. The amp was Blue Circle Mosfet prototype and designer no- nonsense guy was quite impressed with this so called "overpriced POS" Really . And if you and kids would like to go into low power tube amp in the future it will do splendid too..Regards, L
