I have changed the caps inside the Era Gold V for Blackgate FK and non polar N type capacitors. The wires have also been swapped for 4 N purity solid core silver ones. But the outcome is not up to expectation which might be due the cause of synergy mismatching. The sound has definitely changed if I am not sure for the better. I think I will check that out by putting the original Elna Starget and Evox bypass caps back.
I checked the Era Gold out yesterday and confirmed that the Blackgate modified Phono stage had better performance than the stock one in overall transparency, clarity, bass impact, tonal colors, and especially dynamic range. Extended listening confirmed the accuracy of my hearings and further comparisons with another two phono stages (Jasmine LP2.0 SE and a Tube phono stage based on a VTL design) enhanced my sense of judgement for sure. Using a Ortofon Kontrapunkt A on a Lingo powered Linn LP12 and Ekos tonearm and a Denon 103R on a Denon DP80 and Mirco Seiki MA505S tonearm, with 100 ohms and 32ohms set on the EXP(unmodified) respectively, the sound reproduced was superb. I think the modification with Blackgate caps has advanced the already excellent performance of the Era Gold V even further though I was not certain at the beginning.
Hi Tszeking,Thanks for sharing your experience. I will try the blackgates.
I am also in the process of rolling opamps on the Elevator. I decided to substitute the stock AD829JN with other opamps such as AD797, AD744, AD743, OPA627, NE5534 to name a few. Currently the AD797 and AD743 is on the shortlist for best. They had more dynamics and provides more oodles of detail. AD744 is also very good but rather noisy. OPA627 had better timbre but lacks dynamics.
I still have several other opamps I need to audition tho.Let me know if you have anymore tweaks. This is so much fun.
Which AD797 and OPA627 have you tried? I think the AD797 AH and the OPA627AM are better than the AD797 AQ and OPA627 BP.I was told that the 111BM and OP128 were very good sounding.
