The Ikea racks cost anywhere between 1-5% that of the high-end racks you mention. If someone could afford $3000-8000 for a rack, I doubt a $15 Lack is on their radar. The Lack is a significant improvement over cheapy "place holders" racks like the flexi or cheap Lovan, etc. but that's about the extent of it. A Target rack (or similar) with Neuance shelves is a significant step up.

and I made and enjoy the DIY IKEA rack. If one is seriously considering Grand Prix, then IKEA is not in the universe of possibilities. I think what he is asking is how good is the IKEA; how good a value is it? It's a great value that represents trickle down design principles by the likes of Ken Lyon. I've read posts where folks who have $700-1000 racks replaced them with one. For me, the next progression would be some type of relatively affordable support system on which I can place Neuance shelves. I think such a system would get one well past the point of diminishing return.
I have a 5 tier metal Target(UK) rack (model BB5) with all 4 vertical columns sand filled. The horizontal "beams" of each tier are not sand-fillable however.Currently, my machines rest on particle-boards which rest on 5mm sorbothane pieces and then onto the beams of the rack. I was just wondering if Neuance could better the performance.
You could start with just one Neuance shelf for either your CD player or turntable. The price is not terribly prohibitive (under $200) and if you don't like it, you should have no problem selling it on A'gon. In my experience, the Neuance is a major step up from particle board or MDF shelves.
they aren't too expensive and they do come up used on Agon occasionally. One was just listed for $120. I agree with starting with the source component is a good idea; I've seen many posts that confirm this thinking.
Thanks for the perspective.
I was just wondering how far away Pluto is from the Sun! ;-)
Thanks
I like the looks of the Ikea Lack rack.I've thought of using this setup in conjunction with Machina Dynamica Promethean isolation bases. I bet that would be suhweeet.
