I love the GB large mat and 2.2 effect. Makes things sound much nicer. However a 2.2 only a few weeks old fell off in my Trivista CDP. I had to open it and take the transport cover off to get it. In fact the 2.2 from new would come out with the edges (four opposed sides) starting to release from the disc surface. Herbies immediately refunded my money when I emailed him without asking and without returning the 2.2 (which I did later)Great service. I tried the small permanent stick on type of hubs but didn't get the results of the GB full or 2.2 size. I am going to just get the full size mat again......unless the new 2007 version is thinner than the 2.2 -ET
Other Herbies stuff tried:Gabon ball/cup
Big Tenderfeet
Tube dampers
Cable Dampers
Grungebusters
Turntable mat
Big fat black dot

sorry to hijack this! Awe-d-o-phile, have you tried the tt puck with the WE mat by chance??? for my unsuspended tt, its a killer combo.
When i ordered the puck i inquired to Steve about the newest grungebuster cd hub...i own 2 previous versions and wasn't impressed with them. He gave me the new cd mat free of charge, such good customer service. it is better than the old versions, but...Now i have 3 versions of the g-buster mat that i don't use, but the WE mat, the Sonic Stabilizer puck AND g-buster material inbetween flat topped coupling footers are the BOMB. G-buster material couples...
Steve seems like he's constantly tweaking, improving designs and listening to his customers.
Matt:I have the WE mat and a home made "clamp" of sorts. I am selling my vinyl now and my TT setup as it can't approach the dynamics, image and bass of my CDP. This is also why I am trying everything under the sun to tweak the CDP.What do you use on your CDP and what kind of CDP is it? I also decided to let vinyl go because there are little or no new releases on the format.
I'm almost in the same boat you are, in terms of thinking about giving up vinyl. maybe its cuz my cartridge now has a mystery open coil, or cuz my new Promitheus TVC has usurped the Mapleshade vibe draining gear which my tt claimed ownership too previously? to get my rig back to 100% is gonna cost big $. I got into Lp's for the sonics, but lately i'm finding a lot of satisfaction with CD's. However, for the music i listen to, there are lots of new LP releases cropping up.Herbie's puck is the shizzle though with the WE mat, a real good combo for sure.
my cdp is a modded XBOX. that's right!! modded in that i've replaced the male plug with an Oyaide P-079 AND removed 10 screws from inside the case (so internal vibes don't travel throughout the innards). Plus i'm using Anti-IC's w/Bullett plugs rather than the OEM cabling. Before these tweaks the XBOX's imaging, timbre and presentation killed my old cdp. its so smoooooth. Now its bass & imaging are ridiculous.
To my ears, this XBOX sounds as good (sometimes better) as my tt rig which costs 10X more...and i really, really like my analog rig! Previously, i had a Sony scd-595 changer for 2 years and hated it.
I treat all my CD's/DVD's with Mikrosmooth and a shot of the Ionoclast for static. I also treat the XBOX with a degaussing track (Cardas Sweep Track) occasionally.
Herbie's latest mat is the best (Herbie's mat) i've tried, but i just can't get past the sound. A previous poster mentioned HF rolloff, maybe that's it. I just don't like the sound with it on - whether at home, on my computer or in my car. pretty sure its cdp dependent though...
Also, what's a Promitheus TVC?
WE mat = Herbies way excellent turtable mat
Prometheus TVC is a passive linestage TVC stands for transformer volume control. Other passive line stages use a resistor ladder or other type of resistance
and Matt I knew you were using an X-Box as a CDP from a post here or on Audiogon. You would need a very ballsy low output impedence (100 ohms or less IMO) to succeed with a passive linestage. Also a lot of gain, more than 50 or 60 db even with a high output cart.
The output voltage of components has taken on a whole new meaning for me with the TVC in the chain. Luckily my old Muse amp is compatible.I increased the output on the VPP-1 phono pre to 50db output and i'm darn near stuck with a Grado cartridge w/5mv output. I'd need a difft pre OR an SUT if i wanted a lower output cartridge...another vinyl woe.
IF the XBOX had the same output level as my old cdp, it'd be perfect. To deal with this I'll probably get a DAC with the intention of using it with a dedicated Mac Mini as a source in the future. however, for now everything is working fine.
This TVC rocks. If i had the means i'd sell all my equipment and design a system around it...
