Washington, DC, broadcast radio is changing again today. Bonneville-owned commercial station WGMS (104.1 MHz), which for 58 years has been synonymous with classical music in the DC area, had been up for sale to the Redskins owner for use as an all-sports outlet. However, 104.1 switched format from classical music to "George 104" rock this afternoon. The old WGMS programming last year switched from the original 103.5 xmtr to a weaker one on 104.1.Two years ago WETA-FM (90.1) switched format from classical music to talk. Today they had a press release posted on their website saying they were reverting to 24-hr classical starting 8 p.m. tonight. The also said that (as has been rumored) WGMS will donate their CD library to WETA-FM.
An FCC petition has been filed to transfer the WGMS call sign to WETA-FM's repeater xmtr in Hagerstown, Md.
Follow Ups:
I'm making Washington my retirement home and will be spending weekends there until the we make the move final. But I can't wait to hear a good classical FM station again. Now, if WAMU would only bring back more jazz, it would be near perfect.BTW, my seven-story building has a roof deck and I noticed a very nice FM antenna on my last visit and discovered through a phone call that each unit is wired with the external antenna.
104.1 never did make it over to my stereo in AU Park DC, even with my rotary rooftop antenna. I'm delighted to get real music back on public radio. Kudos to WETA radio for learning from its mistake. The folks at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue could learn from you.
Charlie,
I heard of the switch on TV4 news tonight. Man, what a quick switch. Apparently WGMS and WETA have been plotting this for some time under deep cover. I wonder if some of the WGMS hosts will be picked up by WETA? Actually, WETA comes in about as well for me (Fredericksburg VA) as WGMS, even though it's xmitter (at American U.) is about 15 miles more distant. Probably because of the much greater radiated power (75kW vs. 20kW). Let's hope it works out and WETA stays the course. I plan to resume sending contributions to WETA again.
Dale.
