I hate devices that intentionally introduce distortion, but I have to admit, this probably adds fidelity. I think the station compresses the whole signal, so I think you should avoid the 2BX or 3BX, which broke the signal up into frequency bands.Does the signal sound closer to the source material with the dbx unit in?
Finally, it should be possible to DIY such a unit, which might sound better. (I can't believe I just advocated a DIY distortion device.)

Yes, my expander is a 1BX model which does its "thing" across the whole audio spectrum. My justification for "introducing distortion" is to try to undo the distortion introduced by the FM radio stations. The proof of the pudding will come when I'm able to listen to FM broadcasts of certain Beethoven piano sonatas for which I have vinyl recordings by Ivan Moravec (e.g., Appassionata, Pathetique, etc). During the quiet passages, you're almost straining to hear every detail; the louder passages almost knock your socks off. It'll be interesting to hear how close I can come to that with FM broadcasts played through my expander.
But even with my testing so far, the musical dynamics are definitely improved.
I could swear I saw an article on doing just that (DIY Expander) in Popular Electronics back in the day (late 70's maybe).
If you can excuse the humour, how's this solution to fight compression? 1000W mono block amplification driving Avante-Gard horns. Just turn the volume down as low as you can!
I think that (headroom) is only part of the problem. If I'm not mistaken, the compression reduces the dynamic range of the program material - so the kilowatt amps would just make a really loud compressed sound - of course at those volumes, you might not be able to tell...lol
Oh well, there no such thing as a free lunch. I was thinking that that combo preserve whatever dynamic range is left better than most systems. (if not your hearing).SmokeTest
