Hello,
I'm looking to purchase a nice tuner, and have it modded. This will go into a higher end audio system, so an "audiophile" sound is important. I also don't have the best reception in my area.
I have been looking at:
Kenwood models : KT-8300, KT-5020, KT-6040, KT-8007
Sansui models : TU-919, TU9900
Accuphase T-100I have read through the tunerinfo site, and other sites, would like opinions from here.
Thanks,
Follow Ups:
I will eventually open it up and try to determine if mods could help the sound or anything but it sounds really good already not to mention it has quite a few high end weak signal helping features. I got mine for much less than a couple hundred off ebay. Seems like a pretty good deal to me now in hindsite.
I have purchased a Sansui 9900, what mods are recommended? Thanks,

A good choice. Go to FM tuner info .com
try asking at the fmtuners forum on Yahoo. Every tuner fanatic that's listened to all those tuners is up there.I'm using Kenwood Kt 7500 and the sound quality rivals cd sound. The Kt7500 because they're easy to get fairly inexpensively with good cosmetics.
I also have a Sansui TU 717 that would equal it with mods but will most likely sell it as I've had it so long. It's a rare one in excellent condition and looks very nice. It sounds like crap though compared to the modded Kenwood I use. So you're on the right track. Get a vintage tuner and have it modded, the sound quality improves immensely. I pulled the TU717 out of my system after 5 minutes as I couldn't take it anymore.

Later Gator,
Crank up your talking machine, grab a jar of your favorite "kick-back", sit down, relax, and let the good times roll.
than just that,What - specifically - are the problems with reception of 'your desired stations',*, at the dwelling where the tuner will be listened to. Hills buildings etc!? * what direction are they 'each' in.
can you / may you erect a serious directional, and external /loft mounted FM Antenna?
What is the dwelling made of etc?
Believe it or NOT getting the best possible sound-quality - from an acknowledged 'good sounding' tuner / modded audio and RFI stages - for 'sound' - can STILL after all that depend a LOT more than you might on how much antenna you need / willing to get!
And a 'good' FM directional is also a GOOD CH6 TV antenna in the USA / - see the post about the FCC's rulings.

And yes, if I need to, I can mount an antenna on the roof of my 2 story home if need be.Thanks,
Aside from your room/set-ups effects, I think you can get an idea at TIC better than elsewhere. While some people who own modern expensive gear can't take me seriously, I would mention that I too own 'quiet cabinet', 'low diffraction', 'good sounding MFplastic cap' xover speakers, > 25 yrs since, and modernised if not MODERN valve amps.
It really IS my experience than an external and quite directional antenna, up high-ish with a good pattern aka higher selectivity is a GOOD thing for GOOD sound. IME right here and NOT for reasons of gain!
The station I listen to 80% of the time, and t'other one are both strong enough to quiet, though t'other is 8kw Cf 60!!!!! same direction / same-tower. So why, then? It's a HILLY city! Snuggled into the Australian Alps!
You're welcome to visit the URL below, which is NOT on my own site! saves me getting verbose!!!!
Hello,
I have already read through the tic site, and would like comments about what choices I have come up with for possible tuners.
I am not concerned as much with an antannae as I am with which tuner I purchase.
This thread was suppossed to aid me in choosing a tuner. Thanks,
Hello,
Actually, what I meant by "bad" reception is that alot of the stations I like are not that well picked up on cheap radios. Actually, I don't think reception will be a problem as long as the tuner has good sensitivity.
More important is sound quality.. I want the best sound quality from the base, midrange and treble. I want the best imaging, huge soundstage, and the best in realism. Thanks,
Hoping for a little help.....Thanks...
Do a search here in the Radio Road forum. There is a lot of info from people who have asked your same question?

1977 Harman-Kardon Citation Eighteen. Send it to Joseph Chow for his $300.00 mod and you've got a tuner that is truly audiophile quality. I have one as well as a modded Citation 14 tuner in my 2nd system. I know you don't want to hear it, but the antenna does play a crucial role in the overall sound quality you want to achieve. The tuner and the antenna are necessary partners. A tuner is only as good as it's reception. I have found the Citation tuners to have a life-likeness and tonality that is 2nd to none.
