What's the best antenna(indoor, apartment dweller)+tuner combo I can do for $200-$300? Vintage/used is fine, actually preferable since you can get much better deals that way. Thanks!
Follow Ups:
I like slim digital Japanese tuners... lately, the Yamaha TX-930 or TX-950 can sometimes be had for less than a hundred bucks on ebay. That's a lot of tuner for the money. There's a T-1 now sitting at $40 or a T-2 for $200 w/no bids. Buyer's market at the moment...
and if the vertical dipole doesn't crack it,don't go straight to rhombics, even several!
try some rabbit ears, and ajust for each station unless you getlucky.
I find it is best for the rabbit-ears to be closer to the transmitter than you are, where they will care less about your movement!

I can't speak to best cheap tuner, but for an antenna, a vertical folded dipole is really hard to beat. It is simply the usual twin lead antenna often supplied with new tuners, mounted vertically instead of the usual horizontal orientation. I've tested a number of configurations, and the vertical folded dipole outperforms horizontally mounted dipoles and folded dipoles, even a 6 element FM yagi antenna. It is omni-directional, has same gain as a standard dipole, and in my tests, brought in clearly stations which were garbled or noisy with the other antennas. Vertical orientation has the advantage that multipath distortion is greatly reduced vs. the usual horizontal orientation. It is probably equal in performance to the highly touted half wave whip antennas costing around $90. I have one mounted in the attic, it actually outperforms a FM-6 (the Radio Shack FM small yagi) on a rotator. Give it a try, the price is right - if you don't want to make one, you can buy one for a few dollars.
Hi,Thanks for your recent post on the folded dipole antenna, which I found very interesting. If you don't mind, just to clarify:
Do you mean that the "arms" are folded together vertically. Or spread apart a bit, like rabbit ears? Or separate vertically, for double the vertical height? Or...
Would very much appreciate your input (I had posted the above on Audioasylum.)
