Yes, there was a big improvement in sound, in all aspects--deeper bass, sweeter and more vibrant highs, clearer mids, more air around notes...etc. Occasionally I am stunned by the sound, e.g., the vibration felt from a guitar. Very happy I did it.My reasoning was that this tuner, by all reviews I read, had a great "tuner" RF section, but perhaps the audio stage didn't match it. I took a chance and did the mods and it worked out great-big improvement. Now I have to the address the heat issue.

Did you do any filter mods? I have the "little brother", an Onkyo T-4500. I replaced the two "wide mode" 230 khz filters (X101, X104) with new low loss 180 khz Murata filters. I also replaced the two "narrow mode" 150 khz filters with new low loss 150 khz Murata filters.I am now picking up more stations, they are stronger. So, sensitivity has noticably increased. Also, selectivity is better. I have added a good outdoor antenna and am picking up stations from two large cities each 60-65 miles away, plus local stations. And I am picking up stations as far as 150 miles away. I am able to listen to the weaker stations next to local strong stations with no interference.
There are only 100 FM frequencies available, and I have 33 programmed in my presets. And I am picky. These are all good, clear stations that have music I like... jazz, R&B, contemporary, and oldies, but no hip-hop, heavy metal, or country. So, being able to get 33 stations that I like is a miracle.
The best mod, though, is a good outdoor antenna. I am using the $25 Radio Shack antenna, really the Antennacraft FM6. The eaves mounting brackets and 5' pole, RG6 cable, all together, with antenna, about $60 worth of stuff. Money well spent.
Glad to hear of your good results.I didn't do any mods to the tuner section, filter or otherwise. In fact, one of the tuner experts I spoke to said he had tried some upgrades to the tuner section (I don't recall which) and they did not work very well. So, I only tried the upgrades to the audio section, which worked extremely well- it's like a whole different tuner.
was reluctant to perform the IF filter mods because they are really case-specific, i.e., what is good for one listener with one tuner at one location with one set of listening preferences may not be good for another. If I ever got my hands on some flat-group-delay IF filters in small lots--that's the difficulty--I would socket them at first and play around to see what would give me the best results.
"If I ever got my hands on some flat-group-delay IF filters in small lots--that's the difficulty--I would socket them at first and play around to see what would give me the best results."Greg Gortman has them, link hot.
The cost per filter is $1.50 each. Shipping is fixed at $2.00 for any quantity in the U.S.A.
