In Reply to: ASL "Twin Head" preamp posted by spkrplus on August 20, 2002 at 17:45:01:
I bought one a couple of weeks ago. Last to first: yes it does have a remote volume control, but not remote input selection (the remote is a chunk of aluminum that reminds me of remotes of decades ago); it has four sets of inputs (single-ended RCA's), and two sets of outputs; heat is negligble compared to PP amps I've had in the past; 2A3 cost can be cheap (Sovteks are about $60 for matched pair); weight is high for a pre; obviously its available since I bought one, but it is just out and Divertech has been on vacation - they may be back. It easily surpasses my Cary SLP-50, and in the system I am using it in (Welborne Laurel IIX Ultimates with 300B TJ Meshplates, Adire HE10.1 speakers, Sony 9000ES/Sony XA777ES, andMarantz 8300 SACD players (I tried all three of my current players with it), and in the same system I like it better than my Emotive Erato pre.
The short of it is that I feel it is an outstanding bargain for the 1250 price, and I love the way music sounds through it - I find it makes music in my system sound amazingly involving.
Follow Ups:
How noisy is the Twin Head? With the Earmax, hiss is non-existent, but there's this annoying hum. Over time, the hum becomes more and more noticeable.

Man, this forum is great! I suppose the other tubes are in the $5-10 range? With daily use, what is estimated tube longevity? Without checking, I'd guess the other preamps you mentioned are mulitiples more money. Is the output transformer series or parallel-coupled? Did you by chance hear the BAT 6H30 "Super Tube"? Thanks for your participation.

If you stick with current production, then the replacement tube costs are not high; even NOS for the 6X4 and the 6BM8 are not very high, but the 6DJ8's can be very high for NOS.
The Cary was the same price. The Emotive Erato is a Type 27 based amp that goes for close to 3k.
No, I haven't heard the BAT pre.
For your other questions, I suggest you call Tash Goka at Divertech; he's great to deal with.
If you don't have a local dealer you could buy direct, and they do offer a trial period with a restocking fee.
