In Reply to: Martin Logan SL3's don't like the ASL 1001DT posted by watchdoc on August 19, 2002 at 19:54:46:
I've heard the B&W 805's in my system and greatly prefer the SL3's over them. The SL3's will reveal all weaknesses in your system and obviously the amp you're using doesn't have enough power to drive them properly. Try a decent solid state amp. I'm very happy with my McCormack DNA-1 rev A amp.
Follow Ups:
With the right amp, the SL3's are absolutely wonderful. However, even medium powered tube amps will have soft bass and compressed sound overall. I must have tried half a dozen tube and sand amps on my old SL3's till I came to the realization that sand, unfortunately, is the right way to go. I ended up settling on the Threshold T200. The B&W 805 will not hold up a candle to the SL3 with the right amp.

My Martin Logans are in my solid state home theater setup where they serve as the front mains. For multichannel I power them with Marantz MA500's and biamp them with another pair of MA500's for 2 channel listening. My source is a Marantz CC4000OSE or a Marantz AV9000. I use Transparent Audio Music link cables and I've been pleased with this setup for a couple years. The ASL 1001DT tube amp is slated for 2 channel use in my study. I haven't picked out a pair of mini monitors yet so I just tried it with my SL3's to see how it would sound. Needless to say, if I never hear them together again, that'll suit me fine. I'm going to take my time and finding a good set of speakers that will work with this amp. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
Keep it simple. Find some speakers that have simple and easy load and you will be OK. I have 4 pairs of speakers in my living room that all work well with the ASL. Price from $220 to $3500.
