I've been enjoying the Eric Barbour design that you can find at headwize.com's DIY project section. Built it with a friend last October with bits and pieces he had and a couple of transfomers - one from e-bay, one from a radio club flea, both less than 10 bucks.Been having fun finding and trying different 6sn7s since.
Hi Bobhow many tube are you using?
Six tubes in total. I did not try to use the two 0D3s, but rather used the string of zeners as described in the Eric's text.
I don't quite understand what it is you are asking for. If you rule out the ForePlay because it has 12AU7's in it, then do you rule out all the direct coupled, volt amp to Cathode follower types? This is a simple circuit that has nothing in particular to do with 12AU7 except for it is a cheap, small heater tube that is easy to come by and still sounds great. I agree with you on the 6SN7 issue, likely to sound better... there are other circuits, like a SRPP feeding a cathode follower stage. Are you going to drive your amp off of the plate circuit? Most of the better sounding ones all have the final CF buffer stage to make driving the load easier. Foreplay, Emotive Audio's Sira( got the k$ for that one? ). Anyway, goood hunting, some of the simplest ones sound the best.
regards,
Douglas
