I just got a sleeve of Amperex 6SN7 GTBs and was wondering if Amperex ever made this tube. I dont think they did, but thought I would pose the question. Tubes say "Made In Holland", but have no date codes of any kind. Black base and a strange looking upside down funnel-shaped getter on the side towards the base of the tube. Any thoughts on the sound and origin. Thanks in advance!
Follow Ups:
Usually any Amperex not made in Europe was made in the US by General Electric and relabed by Amperex so they could offer their dealers a full line of tubes. To date I haven't seen a non European Amperex not made by General Electric, and this would include the 6SN7GTB (I am sure they would tap any maker to fill any gaps in their line).Yours maybe one of the Richardson oddities, as they now use the Amperex trademark (which they now own). More than likely they sourced the tube from the Russian maker.
The "flying saucer" getter confirms the fact that the tubes you have are Russian.
Agree with others. It sounds like they're Russian. I've got one right here in front of me on my desk and your description matches it perfectly. Grey plates with two small rectangular slots through them on each side? Very thin glass? If yes, then probably Russian. The sound of the Russian 6H8C/6SN7 is not that great.
Hi,Could be real coz Philips made 6SN7 both in Berlin (Valvo) and BeNeLux (Miniwatt) (FWIK).
But if so they should have the usual Philips two row code somewhere. But as they are quite uncommon chanses are your tubes are rebranded US tubes.
I have a pair Amperex with BB logo.Black base , short glass , top getter.
With 64 40 number on base.On top of the glass 6SN7GTA made in Canada.
They sound very good and triodes are real close on tester.
I have a pair in brown base. They are rebranded mullards, and are not good sounding.
Shakey, Mullard did not make a 6SN7GTB, ever. Actually they never made a real 6SN7GT either. They are not very good sounding, but I believe Steven is right, they are Russian.
JCoe,
No, Amperex never made a 6SN7. I recall Bugleman sold such a tube, though.
