Dear zarniwoop,
I am not surprised by what you read. The EL34 has high distortion properties; as much as 3 to 4 times higher than some 6550s and KT88s.
Follow Ups:
How can a statement like that be made without qualification as to what operating conditions? Used how? At what operating point?
I have jsut the opposite exp. with EL34. It looks on paper like a more linear valve than 6550 and sounds like it to me too( just used Mullard xf2,4 and SVEL34 in U-L and strapped triode, AB1 and 4200 Ohm Plate to plate, betw 450-520 V B+ ) so I'd like to say, I think the High distortion thing is a figment of somebody's imagination or mis-use. But that is MY opinion and experience. I am planning on using the SVEL34 in next construction and would like specific details of the "High Distortion" conditions and measurements....
regards,
Douglas
I used EL34's in a SE amp, and tried them as pentode, Triode, and 50% UL.Triode was sweet and pure. Next best thing, that I've built, to my 6BG4 amp. Pentode had power, but was harsh. UL was a good compromise, so that's where I left them.
I have tried a few types, including Mullards and also new Svet's. Hard to beat the new Svet's. I sold the Mullards on eBay for some cash for my next experiments, I was so impressed.
