Hello, after finding out that my integraded solid state powers my new (used) spekaers very, very good (and its realivitvly under-powerd) i changed my mind from getting a Pioneer SX-1250 (big, heavy, and a monster power wise) to something more nimble
I am looking for something in the 30-50watt+ range (I say plus because it can be as high as it goes as long as its in the price range) but must be at least 30wpcI want to stay vintage (and that will be cheaper)
I would prefer integraded amp (as i am just getting into tubes, and don't want to spend a lot of $$$ on seprates) and i already have a tuner
Is there any vintage tube amps made by Sony? i havn't really found any
here is my system right now
amp= vintage Sony TA-2650 45wpc, nice little amp
tuner= vintage Sony ST-3950 I love this tuner, very good quality, and i have no intentions of getting a new tuner anytime soon (not for AM and FM at least)cdp= Nakamichi CD Player2 Limited, very nice cdp, I love it, it will be my last cdp, untill SACD realy comes into play, which looking at it might be a looong time, and its 106db SN ratio
spekaers= JBL L100a, you all proably know what these are, and they just plain rock, 93db sensitivty means my 45wpc Sony will power these to louder-then-I-need volumes (where the Sony had trouble on driving my JBL ND310's which were 91db, i couldn't get any volume with the bass i want from them, but the L100a's wow there should be 2 catagorys, 1 spekaers 2 JBL L100)
I am also trying to get into vinal, I am looking for a cheap (vintage of course) turn table (I like the vintage Sony's) and try it out, if I like it, cool if not i will only loose $40 (which is what i plan on spending on a turntable) just something cheap to find it out
ok, here is the final thing:
the amp must be under $100, *maybe* alittle more if it would mean better quality/more power, but keep it vintage (I like the 70's gear) and it should be in good, working condition
can anyone find one for me?
Thanks

I think your best bet will be a pair of PA amps. Stromberg-Carlson somes to mind. Plenty of room underneath for fixing/mods and most ov the monsters run 6L6G, GA,GB,GC types and octal pre-amp tubes, which Svetlana makes well these days( the 6L6's ). AU-33 comes to mind, AU36 is a 4-pack of 6L6G, and there are others. I got one of these from Salvage for $10 and turned it over to the guitar players after a few fixes and it is still cruising. You'll need a pair of course but the old S-C's are an excellent place to learn abut how these things work. THe Bogen MX60A has a pair of 8417's and a large 6k Ohm Output trans which would be great when you finally get tired of it and build your own, and probably stocked with Mullard 12AX7's and 7247's....

You might waste your money if you buy the wrong thing. I bought a Pioneer integrated for about that price that used EL84's for about 20 watts/channel. It sounded pretty awful, and I thought that's OK, time to do some tweaking. Under the chassis was so ugly and cramped that replacing the caps with something reliable and good sounding was impossible. The thing was packed solid with cheap components. Even replacing the old unreliable oil/paper caps with modern metallised film was almost impossible, let alone some good film and foil ones (which are even larger). Also, it was so cramped inside, that it ran super hot, and there was plenty of evidence of components half-cooked. Not worth it. I used the iron for other projects.
A good tube amp for under $100 will be hard to find. As for your JBL L100's, I owned a pair in the early 80's. They were heavy and OK in their day... a good party speaker with loads of bass. But then I discovered some good "audiophile" speakers and never looked back. ;-)
Very under rated equipment - and often found in your price range on ebay. Also look for Scott and other 'also ran' equipment.Honestly, 20 watts is probably plenty unless you're playing outside. I easily pushed 91db klipsch kg's for a while.
And, like someone else pointed out - you will likely need to spend a few dollars on tubes. $100 total won't get you far at all.
Good luck, and welcome to the budget world of vintage tubes.
Also, check out Thorens and Dual tables - they're much better than the Sony's.
All IMHO, YMMV, FWIW, et al.

I don't know of any 70's tube amps under $100 putting out at least 30 watts. But you don't need thirty watts, you just think you do. The lowest priced tube amp that I could suggest would be a Magnavox from a console. You can find them quite cheap but you will need a preamp if your Sony lacks pre out jacks. The ones that use four 6V6 output tubes will do around 15 watts per channel and will be fine with those JBL's (very nice speakers by the way). For a turntable I would advise a Thorens TD 166 MKII but the TD 160 is a bit better and the 145/147 are fine also. For a bit more money you could pick up a Fisher 400 which will put out about 28 watts per channel. When talking tubes 70's isn't vintage. I would avoid the Sony/Jap tube stuff. If you get really lucky you might find something, like an Eico, Sherwood, Dynaco, etc. at a yard sale or thrift store. Remember to budget for tubes. The Magnavox uses two 12ax7's and four 6V6's, all of which are still made and quite cheap, especially used. The Fisher 400 uses about sixteen tubes in all and the four 7868 output tubes will cost at least $100 to replace. If you really want to get into tubes I think you need to consider spending more. No point in buying something not worth listening to that will cost you big $$ to get running right.
the archives by running a search on Fisher,Dynaco,EICO, & Scott. plenty of decent integrateds' with nice phono stages
