There are a few "dudes" around who can get "sand" to work WELL in phono stages. John Curl and Stan Klyne immediately come to mind. "Surprise", just like with tubes, the good stuff is costly.

Most true. That's the danger of my blanket statement tendencies. What I meant was that it is possible to build a fantastic tube phono stage on a shoestring as the circuits were all designed 50-70 yrs ago, eliminating R and D costs and errors, and that w/ tubes it is much easier to get it right due to the simplicity of tube design. Here, here,I was always told, you get what you pay for.
Pay a little more and buy some top quality Tubes!!

Indeed. People will do what they will, but I can only wonder at someone who won't pony up more than the price of a CD or two, or some nice vinyl, for at least small signal tubes w/ a blueblood pedigree. Feed Svetlanas w/ Telefunken, and you will achieve decent results. Then add up total system and LP/CD collection costs and compare to the costs of the most essential part of a tube system, TUBES! But hey, snap up whatever you wish! If it moves you, run with it! It really is about the music, after all. Chris
