AVVT vs.Sophia/TJ mesh 2A3's. Does anyone have any experience with either of these and any preferences?
Thanks,
Chris
Follow Ups:
Regarding the TJ/Sophia 2.5V 300Bs, these are the same as the 5V version, and therefore the extensive comments and reviews about the 5V version apply to it as well. Of course, the operating point is different, since most have used/evaluated this tube in a 300B amp. However, since the recommended plate dissipation (27W, as I remember) is lower than a solid plate 300B, the tube is actually closer to a Sovtek 2A3 (25W) in application (typical 2A3 is 15W).I use these in a pair of PP 2A3 monoblocks, and they have a much more refined sound than the Sovteks 2A3s (haven't tried the AVVTs). More air and 3-dimensionality than the Sovteks.
Norm,
Would you mind describing the difference a bit?
thanks,
First I should say that the amps are Exemplar 2A3 parafeeds driven by 6N1Ps with one side used as an active load. The output also has an active load, SS.The Sovteks are bombastic (I have decided I am tired of the audiophile words). They really have pace and good bass. The TJ 300B 2.5 volters are more effortless and transparent. They give you a strong sense of the recording environment. I should say that before the 2A3 active load was put on to the outputs, the TJs did not sound as convincingly better. Again I am not sure how applicable to other systems these findings are. YMMV should be seriously remembered.
Actually, I think the Sovtek 2A3s sound better than the AVVTs.
