I have HP-Sylvania 5963s in my preamp, but they produce rushing noise bigger than I like. I'd appreciate your suggestions for quieter 5963s. Thanks in advance.
Follow Ups:
I've got 6 RCA 5963s of which 2 display tube rush/quite microphonic, and the other 4 are quiet.
The Westinghouse 5963s that DocB sent with my Foreplay kit are quiet.

Hello,I like the RCA. Balanced and smooth. Very quiet.
Hope this helps.
Couple of things about the 5963.It can't take more than 250v on the plates, which is less than a 12AU7. Be sure it's appropriate to your preamp. The 5963 is not a direct 12AU7 sub, but in can be in some cases and not in others.
The 5963 was never built or marketed as an audio tube. It's a computer tube. That, in itself, means nothing as far as it's suitability to audio goes.
But if not selected by the dealer, many are very noisy and microphonic. Selecting the 5963 for audio in my experience means rejecting over half of a given batch. My experience is that Tungsol 5963's are very microphonic. Early 50's Sylvanias I've had good experience with, as well as early D-getter RCA's, which I find sound the best by far.
I have a pair of RCA's that are dead quiet and I do not need them. Send me an e-mail.
