Hello,I would like to get opinions on what you think is the best current production of this type of tube. I myself will be using these in a preamp. So if anyone is using J.J, Ei, or others please feel free to respond. Of older brands I have used Mullard, Amperex B.B., Sylvania, and Telefunken. Also RCA.
Thanks,

CF,[my opinion] I've used this tube. It is kinda expensive ($30 list) and is a relabeled late 70's-early 80's mil spec Philips ECG 6201.
It's quiet. But, lacks tone. Kinda blah. I wouldn't recommend it, except for sections which need a very hardy tube, which has to be quiet.
This is not a current production valve . I believe that Ei and Sino are the only producers at this time . Why not go NOS ? There are thousands of Mullard Cv4024 (M8162/12AT7WA) around at the moment at reasonable prices .
FB,Well, its currently being sold (though not currently being made). And I've seen ads where amp companies (and these weren't guitar amps, but hi-fi amps) touted the GT 6201M. Extolling their virtue in the manufacturer's product.
I haven't used the Ei 12AT7. Most of my experience is with NOS stuff. But, for ancient Fenders and Marshalls the old US made 12AT7 and Philips (Mullard, Philips, Valvo, Amperex) or TFK made ECC81 seem to bring out the classic tone best.
I, also, haven't tried the Mullard CV 4024. Is this tube similar, in tone to the Mullard E81CC? The last time I bought a few of these gold pins boys for $25, each NOS. Kinda high price---looked like late 60-70's production. Quiet tube, okay tone.
Last set of NOS that were nice, cost $25 each. Dutch Philips Miniwatt E81CC. Nice tone in European guitar amps. Pretty tough tubes. I bought a few about three years ago, so I'm sure the prices have gone up.
Hi Steven ,
No idea about the tone of the CV4024 , I'm a hi-fi freak so I can't comment about the usage within guitar amps . The E81CC designator indicates commercial usage , I would guess these are single support ?The Cv4024 has different construction to the usual ECC81 types , it has the additional M8162 designator referring to a special quality or long-life type . Instead of single support it has double copper anode supports and is of ruggedised construction . Internally the anodes look more like a shorter ECC82/83 . The glass feels thicker than standard ECC81 and there is an extra layer of mica , perhaps to reduce leakage . If you are keen to try some reasonably priced NOS Mullard CV4024 , please email me .
FB,Will keep this in mind. Thanks, for the offer. I have a bunch of RCA 12AT7 BP and these GP Mullard E81CC (could a Philips design, as it has the seam at the top).
And TFK ECC81 buried somewhere or other. The Mullards do have short plates---about the same length as the TFK.
What about ECC801S as a very high quality ECC81?
Nicolas
M,Only had few chances to use this tube. It is a very good tube. But, I don't think the money you'd need to dish out for a real NOS TFK ECC801S is worth it. But, if you have lots of extra cash and can afford them---by all means try them out. Good tone. Lasts a long time.
