Hey,I've recently received a Cary SLP98 pre amp for a week from local Cary dealer. Until then, I was using a Denon receiver as a pre amp. System consists of Coincident Conquest speakers, AH Tojeb tube CDP and Pass Aleph 3 power amp.
Needless to say, the Cary presented a huge improvement (especially in bass response, I didn't really expect such gains there. Like adding a subwoofer). The gains in the mids, highs and overall atmosphere were very significant as well.
I Was really suprised at the effect of a pre amp.. Now i'm convinced..So, before purchasing the Cary, what comparable tube pre amps are recommended in the price range of the Cary, which is around 3K$?
Remote will be a nice benefit (as I'm used to a receiver :)) but not mandatory - Not having a remote makes you WORK for your music! :)Thanks, Roee

Check out the Cary SLP-2002. The list on it is $3000.
The Cary is one sweeet preamp. If you are auditioning with factory tubes prepare to be BLOWN away by even how much better it will sound with NOS tubes eventually. Replace the 6SN7s with some nice old Sylvanias and the 12AX7s and 12AU7s with old Mullards or Siemens and you wont believe it.....I would not trade mine for anything. Consider the 98P for a little more money....nice to have a phono stage and it is a lot easier to sell eventually if it has the phono stage. You shouldnt have to pay full retail either...
Also...get the oil cap upgrade and the remote imo.
