I am purchasing an amplifier from Jeff and interesting in learning other inmates experience with the various 45 tubes available, including the two "new" tubes from Emissions Labs. If you have favorite 6SN7 or rectifier tubes to go along with your 45 tubes choices, that would be of interest too. Thanks for any possible assistance!
Follow Ups:
Before Jeff builds your amp, have him put in the Relcap TFT caps for coupling cap. Maybe you can buy them yourself and have them shipped to Jeff. The most cost-effective and significant upgrade IMHO (even though the relcap is mucho$$$, it's worth it).
I just got in some used TungSol top-getter VT-244 yesterday, and in my modified Korneff 45 SET (Relcap TFT coupling caps, solid silver wire, Solen polyprop for PS caps), the following tube complement simply KILLS: Sylvania VT-231 (use Sylvania metal base or Raytheon VT231 if you want a little more laid-back sound. I like immediacy myself), VV45 solid plates (Can't fault'em), and the TungSol top-getter VT244 (took forever to find. Thanks, LesLemmers). It'll take a lot of work to put it all together, but at least you got one thing going for you. I find the amp absolutely to sound best on its own round aluminum feet directly on MDF. To me, this sounds better than my Tungsten Carbide Rollerblocks, BDRs, Polycrystals, DH cones, etc. That should save you some money :)
I made the TungSol substitution yesterday and changed one other power cord, and since yesterday, listening to my system is like having a hot supermodel nibble on your ear. I'm in heaven.
Is the VT-244 a drop-in replacement for the VT-231/6SN7?
nt
No, it is a Military Designation for a 5U4G.
THe TJ 300B 2.5 v. are drop ins, and IMHO are the best 45s I have ever heard bar none.
I do not know what I was thinking but the above applies to substituting the TJ300B 2.5 volt tube in my 2A3 amps, not my 45. I apologize for my confusion. I did use the VV45 in my 45 amps.
Just because the TJ has 2.5v filaments does not make it a 45. It's still a 300B.You are running the tube not biased properly. What you are hearing is a lot of 2nd order harmonic distortion.
Could be, but it beats all 45s.
Have you compared the Mesh or solid plate VV45 with the TJ???
Yes, I tried the solid plate VV45.
Bill, I have tried over two dozen brands of 45 - ranging from very rare NOS Cunningham globes, DeForest globes, RCA, etc..IMO the Emission Labs mesh plates - which I have been using for over 2 months now - excel in every respect. The Cunningham CX-345 is a very high standard, but the EML mesh is at least as good - marginally cleaner and tighter dynamic bass, but not as soft on top.
The EML mesh is quite different from the EML solid plate. The former is a bit more forward, but more relaxed at the same time, with less depth to the presentation - not quite the expansive depth of image - but relaxing and very musical. Highly recommended.
While my 45 amp is not a Korneff, it too uses the 6SN7 as drivers. I'm using early 40's RCA grey glass right now. I find the Sylvania VT-231 to lack bass, but the 1952 Sylvania JAN-CHS-6SN7GT is a great choice, as is the staggered plates KenRad VT-231 and the Raytheon VT-231.
I just received the EML mesh 45's and have a JK. These are excellent
and may be cheaper in the long run than NOS. How many hours are ST 45's good for? I've been told 1000-2000. The 5U4G rectifier sounds best. 6SN7's that is personal preference. Sylvania VT231's right now.
You will love the amp. 2 great watts. The 5U4G's are cheap enough to just try a few. The RCA's are very good as well as the Sylvania's. I have a Tung Sol(bottom getter), but it really is an RCA. A GE that is a top getter. I think I have a real Tung Sol top getter coming from
e-bay that is labeled GE. The link is below. Is this a TS? Sure looks like it to me.http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=1750142081&rd=1
Looks like a bottom getter to me, but hard to tell from the picture! If you send me an email, when i get home I can sent over some pictures of real T-S, KenRad, Raytheon, etc..
