I have no experience with this tube and probably should get some backups. Thanks.

Check out previous post by Robert. Mullard EZ81 (same tube) is nearly always a good choice. They last forever. The U709 (spec's virtualy identical to 6ca4/ez81) has a slight edge in my opinion over the 6ca4/ez81 but good luck finding one. I have one made by Marconi and one by GEC. Can't tell much/any difference between the two. The U709 seems to make background a little quieter and bass a bit more solid. I have a Mullard EZ81 that came in my preamp that was in daily use for eight years. When I finally got round to rolling that tube I put in my tester and it still tested well into the "new" range on both diodes. It's in my backup/spare tube box waiting for its chance to get back into the game.
The best sounding 6CA4/EZ81 I have heard and by a far margin is Gold Lion/GEC U709.Tim

I did not find any on Ebay, but you only get a short picture at any given time.
Hi,
I tried GE and Sylvania in a PS I breadboarded and found little if any measurable difference between the two. Measured B+ and conduction time and rise time to a specific voltage, not jsut a twitch in the positive direction although all were close with 3 different date tubes sample size between the two manufacturers. Very nice tube, almost SS efficient at up to 30 mA.
regards,
Douglas
