Other than cosmetic differences (gold pins) what's the difference? Uncle Ned supplies both varieties (tested) .Also these have grey plates. Is there a difference in sound between the old greay plates, the recent silver plates and the current greay plates?
Follow Ups:
Here's the differences:1. Grey plate vs. silver plate
2. Gold plated pins
3. The Elites are selected for low noise and microphonics, as well as good section to section balance. I've seen very good balance in the 100 or so that have passed through here, BTW.
I think it's safe to say that a good Ei 12AX7 can be an absolutely wonderful tube, and purchasing the Elite series tubes cuts way down on the "less than good" Eis you buy. Some inmates have suggested buying 10 or more of the standard Ei to get a couple pairs of good tubes. That's not necessary with the Elites IMHO. Not that they don't ever have a bad one-I've sent back about 5%- but that's WAY down from the regular Ei line.
I like them a lot.
Are you Jimmy McShane from Baltimora, the group that did "Tarzan Boy" in the mid-80s? Inquiring minds want to know...
Nope, sorry, not me. I'm from Chicago, lived here all 51 years.
Jim,The penultimate 80's song, if I remember right. Jungle call and all. Jim, you'd be great doing the vocals to this. You'd probably have to hunt down some Rhino Records 80's hits CD or Richard Blade's KROQ CD's to hear the tune.
Wasn't the title "Jungle Love" ???
Didn't Morris Day & The Time do "Jungle Love?"
That song (and band) were also featured in Kevin Smith's last movie- "Jay & Silent Bob Strike Back", if you are into that stuff!
Cheers,
Dman
No, I haven't seen "Jay And Silent Bob Strike Back," but they do appear in "Dogma." That's the one where it turns out that God is Alanis Morrissette. But anyway, weren't The Time one of Prince's projects?
When a component, tube, or system can't get something like "Tarzan Boy" and "Jungle Love" right, I don't want it. I don't know about EI's 12AX7s, because I don't have tube equipment that uses 12AX7s. But the regular 12AT7 from EI only does a so-so job on dance music like this. The sound, from top to bottom, lacks weight, force, and body. Still, that's better than being bloated, slow, and dull. I just HATE components that retard the music's speed, timing, and life.
You got that right about The Time. They were in the movie Purple Rain, and had a slew of Dance "oriented" mix LPs back in the "Old School" days as the younger dudes call it today!BTW, Jay and Silent Bob are in the following movies and shows (all Kevin Smith projects)-
Clerks
Mallrats
Chasing Amy
Dogma
Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back
Clerks: the animated series
Also, yeah- those EI 12AX7s get the boogiliciousness out of my Precision Fidelity's phono stage!!! LOVE THE FUNK!!!!!
Baltimora's Lyrics for Tarzan Boy. Big time dance song, of the 80's. The "oh,oh,oh..." part is sung like a Tarzan yell. Jim, never thought you'd be into the crude musician side of tubes :-)Tarzan Boy

Everyone should save your post.IIRC, I first heard "Tarzan Boy" in the summer of 1985. My dad just HATED this song and Boys Don't Cry's "I Wanna Be A Cowboy." But anyway, I remember lining up for baseball practice, and one of my teammates came running down the hill, singing "Tarzan Boy." I then spent the rest of the summer in Honolulu. I was walking in the parking lot at Holiday Mart (now Daiei), and this truck slowly drives by, blasting "Tarzan Boy." I swear, it made people want to follow the truck, and march to the "Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh" part.
Moments like these made me want to get better audio equipment, so I could get off on the music even more. I've been bringing music like this to shows for years. After the initial weird looks you get from the manufacturer/dealer, everyone realizes that THIS is why we became audiophiles in the first place, and all of a sudden, people get up and boogie!
BTW, Baltimora's Jimmy McShane is from northern Ireland.
