In Reply to: What is the warmest, ill-defined, sloppiest, tubby 12au7 you have heard? posted by Paully on April 28, 2007 at 13:27:34:
I just tried a pair of RCA 5963 Blackplates which many people like as a 12AU7 drop in.Not a good match in my setup-way too warm.
You are welcome to them for what I paid last week-13$ shipped.

RCA 5963s are the warmest, sloppiest, 12AU7's I've heard -- great recommendation!
Why Thank You! :)They were quite warm with uber bass.
Interesting tube actually and just a bit too much of a good thing in my setup which is already tilted toward the slightly warm and bass heavy side of things with my Odyssey Mono Extremes and dual ACI Titan subs.
plus another 3. They didn't strike me that way, but hey, its been a long time and my audio knowledge then was lacking (still is, but that is another story). Time to toss them in. Thanks!
Every preamp circuit, source> preamp> amp> speaker chain is different so you just don't know quite what will happen when you drop something in from my limited experience. RCA Cleartops have very good clarity, Mullards have smooth midrange, etc.Generally, the characteristics noted about a tube seem to be present-it just sort of depends on how they integrate, or not, with the rest of the system.
