There are plenty of tubes that virtually everyone agrees is "the tube" to get. Regardless of whether you think it is justified what in your opinion is the most desirable 6CA7. Only 6CA7s please Eli D. has informed that they are constructed differenty but electronically equivilant. I have amps that really seem to perform best with fat bottle 6CA7s and not as well with EL 34s, as irrational as that sounds.
Follow Ups:
I have settled on E-H 6CA7s in my Rogue Atlas. They sound great to me.
try finding a quad set NOS !
set aside for my Marantz 8B and they sound great..
My favorite 6CA7 is the Sylvania/ECG fat bottle version. The late RCA branded tubes are the same as well. It has great bass. The highs are not the best but it is a good sounding tube. Reliable as well. Unfortunately they are now valuable do to being sought after by the guitar players.
6CA7s are beam power tetrodes. EL34s are power pentodes. They are electrically equivalent, but don't sound alike.US made NOS is a good place to start in the "beamies". Check AA sponsor Jim McShane's pages for stock. Try the other tube selling sponsors too.
