What brands and good deals should one look for?
Follow Ups:
I'd go with the SED 6550. I think it is the best one being made right now. I've been listening to them in my ARC D75 Tube Eater for a week now with excellent results. I cancelled an order I had for a quad of KT90s because I like them so much.
I've been buying from TubeStore, Tube Depot and Parts Express. I think TubeStore is the best of the three. Their service is top notch and they sent me a tube to replace a defective KT66 I had before receiving the bad tube back. Parts Express is good but higher priced.
I bought probably five quads from Tube Depot. One matched quad they sent me had three tubes the same and the fourth had a different color base and different glass graphics. Maybe sonically it does not matter but it looks bad when your tubes are on top, in full view. Very hack. I called them up and the guy I spoke to did not care and was no help. I have crossed Tube Depot of of my list. I like their t-shirts though.
I bought from ARS Electronics in the past and they were good at the time. I don't know about today, ten years later.
The roughly 16 Ruby brand tubes (made by Shuguang) I purchased from PartsExpress.com have been excellent, but they cost more than the Russian tubes, including SED. They match for plate current and transconductance which may be why. They also offer a six month warranty.
Good luck hunting!
I have a Quad of 6550 SED winged "C" coming from http://www.conusaudio.com/
Good price and handy if your in Canada.
I second that !!!
I love my coke bottle SED 6550s in my SE Amp.
Not as extended as EL34s or KT66s
but better balanced sound.
Excellent suggestions. Thank you. :)
I went looking for a couple of spare 6550s.
BUT they are SED KT88s labelled as 6550s.
Just wanted you to know.
