Just wondering what your experience's are with this tube in the SP6/B
and any suggestions as to which 5751's work with the ARC. Thank you much.
Follow Ups:
I've used 3, in my SP6: GE black plate 5751, GE grey plate 5751, and a sylvania 5751 (only 1 in the 1st position).I like the GE black, then sylvania, then the GE grey plate.
But, for the cost of GE black plate 5751s you can get Siemens 12ax7, or Telefunken 12ax7, and they are better. Best bang for the buck are Chinese 12ax7c, I prefer them to the 5751s.
Dont use 5751s in the phono sections.
Probably will work fine in the line stage where there is open loop gain to burn. I would be wary of using them in the phono stage except for the last stage which IIRC is a cathode follower, because the RIAA EQ is designed taking into account the open loop gain of the 12AX7 tubes which is a bit higher (mu of 100 vs. 70) than the 5751. Substituting 5751s in the first two stages of the phono may worsen the RIAA EQ.
I have used several different types of 5751s. Currently I am using Sylvania Gold Brand triple mica grey plates which have a softer edge. Don't worry about the freakin gain that pre has gain "gone wild" I am using some high efficiancy spekers with it right now but only 50 watts of power and I can't turn the gain past 9:30 or so . My Rat Shack SPL meter gives me readings in the 90s at that point.
I'm using a pair of Bedini Vintage Classic 100 monoblocs with Spendor S5/e's that have a WAY bigger sound than you'd expect from such small speaks; they easily fill my living room (vaulted celings-LOT OF CUBIC FEET). Gain's never been an issue. Thanks for the info.
5751 will work well in ARC SP6B, but it only produce 70% gain...
