The primary reason is that such construction allows greater capacitance value in relatively smaller physical size packages. They permit compactness over any other capacitor-construction type.

Ron, hi. Yes, physical size versus capacitance is a consideration, but from those conversations with a friend who goes back a long way with RCA in a variety of upper level positions it was cost not size that drove the marketplace.
Perhaps you are taking your friend's comments out of their original context. Your implication does not explain the widespread use of film construction for smaller capacitance-value positions such as stage coupler or phono equalization duty. BTW, shoehorning a film-construction cap into the alloted space now occupied by an electro-chemical construction will be difficult if not impossible in an assembled commercial amplifier.
Ron, hi. I am talking power supply filters here - not couplers -electrolytic caps as used in the power supplies of amplifiers. The "perhaps" line is a non starter. There was no implication made. And, by the way - it is "lytic" not litic.
