Hi Folks,
The 'best 12au7' discussion pops up on here regularly and the early - mid 1950's CBS 5814 always shows up as a favorite. I was browsing epay tonight and I see there is a vendor on there selling NOS pairs at a reasonable price (IMHO). I am not associated with the vendor in any way, just passing along the info. Search and you shall find....I have several pairs of these tubes with similar dates and they are very nice tubes in my amp. Sorry if I am bending any asylum rules.....

Yup - that's the one that's my favorite in the Hagerman Cornet. I've tried several of the usual suspects and always prefer this particualr one.
I picked up a pair of these based on your recommendations. Sure hope you're right:) I'll report back when I get them and have some time to test them out.
Well, hate to keep repeating "your mileage may vary", but it certainly is gear/system/room/ears dependent. The CBS consistently is rated highly by most 12au7 users. The going rate for these has been around $35-$40 per pair NOS for a few years now so these were reasonable. I listen to some 1951 Raytheon 5814's with another pair of 1952's waiting in the wings. The CBS are my second favorite type and I have a couple of pairs of those from the mid 1950's. I have heard most of the other contenders including the Siemens chrome plates, Amperex 7316, various Mullards, Brimars, the Tungsol black glass and clear class with gray plates.... The Raytheon and CBS 5814's are the best in my amp. Hope you like them!
