Has anyone used these pre-6SN7 in a preamp? The 6N7 is made of metal in the 1930s. It has a higher Mu, around 40. What did they sound like? This is the same octal base as the 6SN7, is it not?
Follow Ups:
The 6N7 was designed for use in a zero-bias class B push-pull output stage. I have seen it used in line level stages, however, but have never tried it. The original octal basing with pin 1 connected to the metal shell did not allow a dual triode (like the 6SN7GT) that requires all eight pins. The 6SC7 (similar characteristics to the 6SL7GT) also has a common cathode connection to allow a metal shell.
No, not pin compatible - has two cathodes tied together. Not terribly linear, either.
I tried it and it was one of the worst sounds I've heard - fat, hazy, poor top end. Yuk.
So I bought a brand "new" pair to mount on a niece piece of birch as a conversation piece, consolation prize.
