I have one audio aero capitole amplifier- 50watts classe A, 4 6sn7, 4 EL34 and 4 kt88, The 6sn7 are sylvanias drivers tubes, recently I changed the old JJ el34( I think used more than 1500 hours) for JJEL34( blue) and the sound became fantastic, like the old JJ el34 the JJ KT88 were old ( more than 1500hours)so I changed for shuguang KT88SC( new) than the mediuns became not natural, and the hihgs not as clear as the old JJKT88, and the soundstage congested, I would like to know if I need more hours of burning to shuguang KT88S . I am waiting the new reissued gold lion KT88 to try in the capitole. Thanks for hellp me.
Follow Ups:
I'm not going to criticize either the JJ KT88 (old or new) or the Gold Lion "re-issue" because I haven't heard them and it wouldn't be fair. HOWEVER, purely from a construction standpoint, the Penta (Shuguang) KT88SC (which I am using and am crazy about) represent the most faithful copy of the original MOV (Genalex) product. They have SOLID carbonized plates (no other current mfr. KT88's have solid plates, not even the GL "re-issues") and they also have plate cooling fins on top (again, absent from all current KT88's). They also have the copper grid posts, etc., AND from what I've heard, have thicker glass, like the old tubes. They do take some burn-in time, but so do all power tubes. They have great top-to-bottom response (in my fixed bias Mac MC275 MkIV) and sparkle, and seem to have a bit more muscle (power?) than the EH's that came with my amp.
I certainly think the KT88SC tube has more right to the "re-issue" tag then the new Gold Lion ;--)
Luckly I received today four gold lion kt 88 ,and the sound became another , better than 50%, principal in low frequency, this will be my reference kt88 tubes. and I listend only for one houer maybe will be better...
How long did you let the Shuguangs burn in? My experience with them (and most other kt88's) is that a minimum of 50 hours is needed for them to open up....and they show their full performance in 75 - 100 hours. Good luck.
The shuguang KT88SC burned only 15 hours, and in the first 5 hours they sounded better than now.
With my new KT88-98 I am in same situation.
I migrated from New production JJ KT88 to Valve art KT88-98.
First listen - very open and natural sound, strong bass.
Now - feel mids a little agressive, weak bass.
