I had been using the newer EI's for some time when I came accross this statement. I'm not even sure which one they are talking about. The new ones are long plates, there are NOS w/short plates, there are long silverish plates and long gray plates. I don't recall any warning from Cal. I've used them all in my Alpha and Sigma and they are both still chugging right along. I changed my electronics and speakers a few years ago and I re-planted my EH's in the Alpha and found I preferred the bottom end (fuller) than any of the EI's in it.
FWIW.
Follow Ups:
Does this DAC use a circuit where some of the cathodes are at a substantial voltage away from the heaters? Maybe those tubes under discussion have a lower h-k rating? Else maybe it's just fishy! if they say that there's not enough bass? <')///> < :-)
I replaced my Chinese-made 12AX7 in my CAL Alpha DAC with a Telfunken 12AX7 smooth plate and it sounds great and works fine.
Howdy smollet,
Not to be picky, but you mean you replaced "two" tubes, correct, since the Alpha uses two.Personally, I think the Tube store is blowing smoke, when they said that the EI 12AX7 is not recommended for any CAL gear.
Why would that be? I could see if the EI 12AX7 was as tall as an EL34, then its physical size would not permit it to fit inside a piece of small gear, but other than that, why would any 12AX7 tube not be suitable for a piece of gear that mostly calls specifically for a 12AX7?Yes, I do understand that many tubes can be used in the Alpha, like virtually all variants of the 12AX7 such as 12AY7, 12AT7, 12AU7, 5751, 5814, etc.

Sorry, but I misspoke. I replaced the one 12AX7 in my CAL Sigma DAC, not an Alpha. The Telefunken 12AX7 fit without any difficulties - I cannot comment on what the Tube Store said.
