My system is too bright. I have Triangle Antal Esw's, a Cary SLI-80 and a Sony XA777es. I tried my speakers in a buddies system and they were not bright at all. Anyways, I am using Svetlana 6550Cs and I am looking to tame the highs. Any suggestions? What about 6SN7s for the same effect? Thanks!

Follow Ups:
I tried some Cardas Crosslink interconnects and they have helped. I have ordered some Chinese 6SN7s in hope they help as well. I am receiving some Van den Hul The First Ultimate Mk.II to try to further tame the slightly tipped up sound. I am going to replace my output tubes soon so your suggestions are greatly valued. After I get the rest of the equipment figured out I will place an order. I think it is between the SED KT-88 and the SED 6550C after I evaluate the system with the new driver tubes and new rectifiers (Sovteks, hey, I figure if CJ uses them in their 22,000 dollar stuff I can use them too!) that I ordered as well as the new interconnects. Again, thanks for all the help!Oh, I have bass traps, 6 inches thick rock wool, behind the speakers as well as a four inch thick trap behind the listening position. No ringing from claps in the room, it is pretty well damped at this point with fabrics and bass traps. I am pretty sure that the Sony is part (or all, or none depending on how you look at it...) of the problem which is why I am trying the VdH interconnects to help with the players brightness. I just cannot afford the VT-231s. If I could, I would get some, but I like the piece of mind from new tubes as well as the much better price. I really appreciate the help!
Commercial or homemade room treatments made a huge difference in my room. I used corner treatments as well as lots of heavy fabric wall hangings. Thick carpet makes a big difference too. When you clap in your room, can you hear a ringing of the sound?I swapped out my Svet KT-88s for some KT-90's and got more HF energy from the system. I'm not sure how the jargon related to those goes these days - these were the kind made around 1999 from the Russian factory that had so much production irregularity.
There were some interconnects (inexpensive Ag-plated Cu) that made my system too bright. Consider that also.
I own the Cary SLI-80. Yes, it tends to be "bright" in a sense, but not with "winged C" SED 6550. It is much "brighter" with old TS 6550. Brightness can be tamed, as someone suggested, by detailed and articulate cables, as well as small and driver tubes. You can try VT-231 Sylvanias, for instance. They are expensive but very neutral and articulate, but have very delicate airy highs. They are available with TubeDepot (NOS) but can be get cheaper if used.
An overly bright sound can be caused by any number of interrelated system issues, not just your choice of output tubes. You may want to try to isolate the cause before rolling expensive tubes. Are all of your sources 'bright', or just the Sony player? Have you tried swapping interconnects around? How about room acoustics? The room the system is sitting in is the single largest factor in the 'sound' of every system. You can tweak room acoustics for free- a lot cheaper than buying new tubes that you could end up having to quickly re-sell as used beacuse they don't work out for you. Your problem may certainly be the output tubes, but I suggest trying the cheapest and easiest potential fixes first.
But the SED KT88's were too warm in my CAD50's - the SED 6550's are about perfect in my present system using the Carys. FWIW - I'm using cheapo EH6SN7's and in this system they are not anywhere near being bright. I understand that others with other systems may not feel similarily.
I was thinking that the SED KT-88s might be the ticket. I think I may just try them to see! Thanks for the help.
I run a matched quad for going on two years,Really like them!
Pricy, but well worth it IMHO!
Darrell,
What is your setup like? Thanks for the help!
