I just bought some 6BQ5's advertised as Philips 6BQ5. It says "Hammond" on the tube "made in Germany."Internal structure looks exactly like some Amperex (labelled Zenith) 6BQ5 tubes I have that are "Made in Holland."
What's the story, and can you point to some pictures of Philips and Philips Miniwatt EL84/6BQ5 tubes?
Follow Ups:
Look for etched codes near the bottom - every Philips division used them.
At one time, Philips actually owned all of these valve companies.
In fact, often, the same machinery was used throughout the UK and Europe. Those etched number/letters on the glass were date and mfr. codes.
Somewhere and sometime in the '80s, bootleg tubes started. Brands were insignificant, as distributors actually could rebrand tubes !
The later German tubes might even be Eastern Euro or Czech or Yugo or Russian tubes, rebranded. This unfortunate situation is a reality of this hobby.
We must realize why genuine, vintage tubes are getting so expensive. The new tube offerings often do not last as long, as the vintage goodies. The oldies might sound better !
But, please remember, new is not better. New Old Stock, yes. New stock, is questionable ! Beware...Be aware...
