anyone have any direct experience with this tube versus the Amperex 12AX7 and Sylvania GB 5751 and other premium tubes ?..they sure command BIG bucks , a bit of a stretch just to try it out ...
thanks Bernard

I don't know about the Tele as the few that I've seen over the years are in the $300 each range, but the Gold-brand Sylvania, triple-mica, black-plate 5751's have trounced everything else that I've ever run in my amp in the 12AX7 position. Very detailed in the high frequencies, huge soundstage, punchier bass, etc. You name it and this tube seems to do it the best. I know a few others here feel the same way about this tube. Paid $175 for a NIB pair off of eBay, which I know is risky, but these tested like new and their sound improved dramatically over the first 2 weeks as they broke in, so I think I got what I paid for. I am VERY satisfied and would like to find another pair to have as a spare set.
Nice tube with the classic TFK-signal-tube-sound ("detailed," open, linear, arguably thin and analytical, YMMV). Designed to be a super long life tube of 50,000 (some suggest 100,000) operational hours. Basically, one set will last you your life time, so some might be able to justify the price.

have you compared it with the 50's LP bugle boys ECC83 at all ...I find this tube balanced ...dynamics / frequency / openness etc not at all analytical ...
I generally avoid anything that is ...
but I know what is great in one system may suck in another
I have both tubes you are interested for.Telefunken ecc803s was rather special tube in some aspect. First it was extremely quiet and detailed tube better than any other ecc83 tubes in my collection in terms of speed and inner transparency through out of spectrum. Dark background, great focus and soundstage width - height. Soundstage depth is fair but nothing special.
On the other hand ecc803s was not magical at all, it sound like great solid state without and sign of 50s euro tubes typical bloom. Philips Copenhagen 50s long welded plate plate or latter D or foil getter Holland made long plate tubes sound more rounded and magical in mid with better projection of vocals and more emotional content.
Also the weakest point of ecc803s was low end which was taut and precise but at the same time not rounded like some other top ecc 83 like Valvo - Hamburg long plate foil or D - getter. However, TFK ecc803S could sound very good in combination with some other warmer tubes with tube magic in mid. I believe in mellow or darker systems it could be a ticket to heaven.
My advice is to avoid such a pricy tube especially if you are fan of Amperex-Philips long plate ecc83 tubes.
Hey Milos, your experience reflects my own. Very well put. Bascially, get the ECC803S if you like TFK's "house" sound. If you are a fan of Amperex, you will unlikely enjoy anything TFK makes.
I find the Siemens a middle-of-the-ground tube. Whereas Amperex has big, rich tones and TFK has light, airy tones, the Siemens is somewhere in between.
