GE 6550's have the best bottom end that I have heard in 6550 tubes. Jim McShane used to have a bunch of NOS 6550A's. Send him an email

Thanx John .I should have explained that im in the uk and realy would like current production tubes as NOS are too expensive for me.So which current production 6550 has a nice tunefull tight bass and smooth mid and top please....james
I have ARC VM-220's which have eight 6550's on each side. ARC ships them with Winged C's, which I ran for 1500 hours. I then changed to reissue Tung Sol's which, in my system showed as well or better in every respect - not just in terms of bass, highs etc., but even more so in terms of the quality of the sound - especially imaging, dimensionality, coherence and clarity. In a number of pieces, I was able to hear an instrument or a voice which was inaudible with the Winged C's. The Tung Sol's were a revelation.
I dont know too much about new production 6550's but I agree with Kstagger on the KT88's. The Shuguang KT88SC from Penta are phenominal tubes.
